HP Printer Has Exclamation Mark – How to Fix it

If your HP printer displays an exclamation mark (⚠️) in Windows or macOS, it usually signals a problem with the printer status, connection, or driver. This icon often appears in Devices and Printers or the system tray, and indicates that your printer is not ready to print.

Check for Connection Issues

1. Ensure the Printer is Powered On

  • Make sure the printer is turned on and has no blinking error lights on the control panel.
  • Check the display for error messages like paper jam, low ink, or offline warnings.

2. Verify USB or Network Connection

  • If using USB: unplug and reconnect the cable, try another port, or use a different USB cable.
  • If using Wi-Fi: make sure the printer is connected to the correct wireless network.
  • If using Ethernet: check the cable and network activity lights on the printer.

Restart the Printer and Computer

3. Power Cycle Devices

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it for 30–60 seconds.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Check the Printer Status in Windows

4. Set as Default and Resume Printing

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click the HP printer with the exclamation mark.
  • Select Set as default printer.
  • If the printer is Paused or Offline, click See what’s printing, then go to Printer > Use Printer Online or Resume Printing.

Update or Reinstall Drivers

5. Reinstall Printer Drivers

  • Go to Device Manager > Printers.
  • Right-click the HP printer and choose Uninstall device.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Download the latest drivers from HP Support.

6. Use HP Smart or HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • HP Smart App (Windows/macOS): Add your printer again and let the app diagnose issues.
  • HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows): Automatically detect and fix connection and driver problems.

Clear Pending Print Jobs

7. Cancel Documents in the Queue

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click the printer > See what’s printing.
  • Cancel all jobs and try printing a new document.

Disable Use Printer Offline (Windows)

8. Change Print Mode

  • Right-click your printer > See what’s printing.
  • Go to Printer > uncheck Use Printer Offline, if checked.

Check for Firmware Updates

9. Update Printer Firmware

  • Go to the HP printer’s control panel > Settings > Printer Update, if available.
  • Or use the HP Smart app to install firmware updates.

If the exclamation mark persists after trying these steps, it often points to a software conflict or a deeper driver issue. Reinstalling the printer completely or resetting network settings can help resolve stubborn cases.
