If your AirTag cannot be found in the Find My app, it indicates a problem with Bluetooth connection, network availability, or the AirTag’s location settings. Below are the steps and solutions to make your AirTag visible again.
Check Bluetooth and Location Settings
Enable Bluetooth
AirTags rely on Bluetooth to connect.
Go to Settings → Bluetooth and make sure it is turned on. If it’s already on, toggle it off and back on again.
Turn On Location Services
Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services and ensure it’s enabled.
Scroll down to Find My and select While Using the App with Precise Location turned on.
Verify Find My Network Settings
Enable Find My Network
AirTags use Apple’s Find My network to send their location.
Open Settings → [Your Name] → Find My → Find My iPhone and make sure both Find My iPhone and Find My network are turned on.
Check Apple ID
Ensure you are signed in with the same Apple ID that was used when the AirTag was set up. If you’re using a different Apple ID, the AirTag will not appear in your items list.
Restart iPhone and AirTag
Restart your iPhone to refresh network and Bluetooth connections.
To restart the AirTag:
- Remove the battery cover by pressing and rotating counterclockwise.
- Take out the battery for a few seconds.
- Reinsert the battery until you hear a sound.
- Replace the cover and rotate clockwise to lock it.
Check AirTag Battery
AirTags use a CR2032 coin cell battery. If the battery is weak or dead, it cannot transmit location data.
Replace it if:
- The AirTag does not make a sound when the battery is pressed.
- The Find My app shows a low battery alert.
After replacing the battery, wait a few minutes and refresh the Find My app.
Move Closer to the AirTag
If your AirTag is out of Bluetooth range (over 10 meters or 33 feet), it will not appear as “nearby.”
Bring your iPhone closer to the last known location and check again in Find My → Items.
If it’s still not found, use Directions in the app to navigate to the last recorded spot.
Use Lost Mode
If your AirTag is lost or missing:
- Open Find My → Items → [Your AirTag].
- Scroll down and enable Lost Mode.
- Enter your phone number or email address.
Once another Apple device detects your AirTag, you’ll receive a notification with its updated location.
Remove and Reconnect the AirTag
If the AirTag is still missing from your list:
- Open Find My → Items.
- Tap your AirTag (if it appears).
- Scroll down and tap Remove Item.
- Confirm removal and restart pairing by holding the AirTag near your iPhone.
Follow the on-screen instructions to set it up again.
Check for Interference and Restrictions
Eliminate Signal Interference
Avoid pairing in areas with multiple Bluetooth devices, car systems, or Wi-Fi routers that can interfere with the AirTag signal.
Disable Restrictions
Go to Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions and ensure both Location Services and Bluetooth Sharing are allowed.
Update iOS and AirTag Firmware
AirTag firmware updates automatically when connected to an updated iPhone.
To force an update:
- Make sure your iPhone runs the latest iOS version.
- Keep the AirTag and iPhone close together for about 15–30 minutes.
Check the firmware in Find My → Items → AirTag → Info.
Reset the AirTag
If your AirTag still cannot be found, reset it:
- Remove the cover and battery.
- Reinsert the battery until you hear a sound.
- Repeat this process five times (you’ll hear a total of five sounds).
- After the fifth sound, replace the cover securely.
Then, bring it close to your iPhone to reconnect.
When to Contact Apple Support
If the AirTag still does not appear in Find My or can’t connect after resetting, it may have a hardware issue.
Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store to inspect or replace the AirTag.
