If your AirTag cannot pair with your iPhone or iPad, it’s usually due to Bluetooth issues, software incompatibility, or an incomplete setup. The following steps outline all possible solutions to help you successfully pair your AirTag.
Check Device Compatibility
Verify iOS Version
AirTags require iOS 14.5 or later.
Go to Settings → General → About → Software Version to confirm your device meets this requirement. If not, update your device under Settings → General → Software Update.
Confirm Apple ID and Find My Setup
Make sure you are signed in with a valid Apple ID and that Find My is enabled:
- Settings → [Your Name] → Find My → Find My iPhone
- Turn on both Find My iPhone and Find My network.
Enable Bluetooth and Location Services
Turn On Bluetooth
Go to Settings → Bluetooth and ensure it’s on. If it’s already on, toggle it off and back on again to refresh the connection.
Enable Location Services
Navigate to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services and make sure it’s active.
Scroll to Find My and select While Using the App with Precise Location turned on.
Check AirTag Battery and Power
Confirm Battery Installation
Remove the AirTag’s back cover by pressing and twisting counterclockwise.
Ensure the positive side (+) of the CR2032 coin cell battery faces up.
Press down until you hear a sound, confirming that the AirTag has power.
Avoid Batteries With Coating
Some CR2032 batteries, such as Duracell with bitter coating, can prevent proper contact. Use an uncoated, standard lithium CR2032 battery.
Restart Your iPhone and AirTag
Restart iPhone
A quick restart can clear temporary Bluetooth pairing issues.
Restart AirTag
- Remove the cover and battery.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Reinsert the battery and press until you hear a sound.
- Replace the cover securely by twisting clockwise.
Once restarted, bring the AirTag near your iPhone and wait for the pairing animation.
Bring AirTag Close to iPhone
Hold the AirTag directly next to your iPhone, ideally within a few centimeters.
The pairing popup should appear on your screen automatically.
If not, open the Find My app and check under the Items tab to see if it’s detected.
Reset the AirTag
If your AirTag was previously paired or is still linked to another Apple ID, it won’t connect until reset.
How to Reset
- Remove the cover and battery.
- Reinsert the battery until you hear a sound.
- Repeat this process five times (you should hear five chimes total).
- After the fifth sound, replace the cover and twist to lock.
Now the AirTag is unlinked and ready for a new pairing.
Remove Old Pairing From Find My
If the AirTag was paired before:
- Open Find My → Items.
- Select the AirTag.
- Scroll down and tap Remove Item.
- Confirm removal.
After removal, bring the AirTag close to your iPhone and follow the on-screen setup.
Disable Interference and Restrictions
Avoid Bluetooth Interference
Move away from other Bluetooth devices, wireless earbuds, and Wi-Fi routers that can interfere with pairing.
Check Screen Time Restrictions
Go to Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions and make sure Location Services and Bluetooth Sharing are allowed.
Update Software and AirTag Firmware
Update iPhone
Go to Settings → General → Software Update and install the latest iOS version.
Apple often includes Bluetooth and Find My fixes in new updates.
Allow AirTag Firmware to Update
After pairing, keep the AirTag near your iPhone for 15–30 minutes to ensure it automatically updates to the latest firmware.
When to Contact Apple Support
If your AirTag still cannot pair after all troubleshooting steps, it may be defective or previously registered to another Apple ID.
Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store to have the AirTag inspected or replaced.
