AirTag Cannot Be Located – What Can I Do?

When your AirTag cannot be located in the Find My app, it usually means the AirTag is out of Bluetooth range, powered off, or unable to communicate with the Find My network. The following steps will help you identify the cause and restore its location visibility.

Check Bluetooth and Location Services

Ensure Bluetooth Is Enabled

Go to Settings → Bluetooth on your iPhone and make sure it’s turned on. If it’s already on, toggle it off and back on to refresh the connection.

Verify Location Services

Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services and confirm it’s enabled.
Scroll down to Find My and select While Using the App with Precise Location turned on. This allows your iPhone to accurately locate the AirTag.

Confirm Find My Network Settings

Enable Find My iPhone and Network

Go to Settings → [Your Name] → Find My → Find My iPhone and ensure both Find My iPhone and Find My network are turned on.
The Find My network allows your AirTag’s location to be updated anonymously using other nearby Apple devices, even when it’s far from your phone.

Sign In With the Correct Apple ID

Your AirTag only appears in Find My when signed in with the same Apple ID used during setup. If you’re using another account, the AirTag will not be visible.

Check AirTag Battery and Power

Replace the Battery if Needed

A weak or dead battery can stop the AirTag from broadcasting its signal. Replace it with a CR2032 coin cell battery, ensuring the positive side (+) faces upward.
Press the battery until you hear a chime – this confirms the AirTag is powered on.

Avoid Batteries With Coatings

Some CR2032 batteries (like Duracell with bitter coating) can prevent proper contact. Use an uncoated standard lithium CR2032 battery.

Bring Your AirTag Within Range

AirTags communicate via Bluetooth within approximately 10 meters (33 feet).
If it’s outside that range, the Find My app may display “AirTag cannot be located.” Move closer to where you last saw it or to its last known GPS location in the app.

When within range, tap Play Sound to help locate it.

Use Lost Mode

If your AirTag is missing and out of Bluetooth range:

  1. Open Find My → Items → [Your AirTag].
  2. Scroll down and select Enable Lost Mode.
  3. Enter your phone number or email.

Once any Apple device detects your AirTag, you’ll receive a notification with its updated location.

Remove and Reconnect the AirTag

If your AirTag still cannot be located after confirming all settings:

  1. Open Find My → Items.
  2. Tap the AirTag (if visible).
  3. Scroll down and tap Remove Item.
  4. Bring the AirTag close to your iPhone to re-pair it.
  5. Follow the setup instructions on screen.

Restart Your iPhone and AirTag

Restart your iPhone to refresh its Bluetooth and network functions.
To restart the AirTag:

  1. Remove the cover and battery.
  2. Reinsert the battery until you hear a sound.
  3. Replace the cover securely.

Open the Find My app again and check if the AirTag appears.

Update iOS and AirTag Firmware

Keep iOS Updated

Go to Settings → General → Software Update and install any available updates.
Apple regularly improves Find My and Bluetooth performance in new versions.

Allow AirTag Firmware to Update

AirTag firmware updates automatically when connected to an updated iPhone. Keep both devices close together for at least 15–30 minutes to allow the update.

Reset the AirTag

If it still cannot be located, reset it completely:

  1. Remove the cover and battery.
  2. Reinsert the battery until you hear a sound.
  3. Repeat this step five times until you hear five chimes.
  4. After the fifth sound, replace the cover and lock it in place.

Then, try reconnecting the AirTag with your iPhone.

When to Contact Apple Support

If your AirTag remains unlocatable after all troubleshooting steps, it could have a hardware fault or a battery connection issue.
Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for diagnostic testing or replacement.
