If your AirTag cannot connect to your iPhone, iPad, or Find My network, it can be due to Bluetooth issues, outdated software, or setup errors. Below are all possible solutions and steps to fix AirTag connection problems effectively.
Check Basic Requirements
Ensure Compatibility
AirTags require an iPhone or iPad running iOS 14.5 or later. Confirm your device’s software version under Settings → General → About → Software Version. If your iOS version is older, update it.
Verify Apple ID and Find My
AirTags only work with a valid Apple ID and the Find My network. Go to Settings → [Your Name] → Find My and ensure it’s enabled. The Find My network and Bluetooth must also be on for AirTag setup.
Fix Bluetooth and Network Settings
Toggle Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
Since AirTags connect via Bluetooth and use Wi-Fi or cellular data for location updates:
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on in Settings → Bluetooth.
- Toggle Wi-Fi off and on again.
- Wait a few seconds and retry connecting your AirTag.
Reset Network Settings
If toggling doesn’t help, reset your network settings:
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings.
This clears saved Wi-Fi, VPN, and Bluetooth configurations that might block connections.
Restart Devices
Restart both your iPhone and the AirTag. For the AirTag:
- Remove the battery cover by pressing and rotating counterclockwise.
- Take out the battery.
- Reinsert it and press until you hear a sound.
- Replace the cover and rotate clockwise to secure it.
Then, try pairing it again.
Check AirTag Battery and Range
Replace the Battery
A weak or dead battery can prevent connection. AirTags use a CR2032 coin cell battery. Replace it if the battery is over a year old or the AirTag fails to beep when pressed.
Maintain Bluetooth Range
Keep your AirTag within 10 meters (33 feet) of your iPhone for setup. If it’s too far away or obstructed by walls, the signal might not reach.
Remove and Reconnect AirTag
If the AirTag was previously linked to your Apple ID, it must be removed before reconnecting.
Steps to Remove
- Open the Find My app.
- Tap Items → select your AirTag.
- Scroll down and choose Remove Item.
- Confirm removal.
Then bring the AirTag close to your iPhone and set it up again following the on-screen prompts.
Check for Interference or Restrictions
Avoid Bluetooth Interference
Nearby Bluetooth devices, car systems, or wireless earbuds can interfere with pairing. Move away from other electronics and try again.
Disable Restrictions
If you have restrictions set up for location services or privacy:
- Go to Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Ensure Location Services and Bluetooth Sharing are allowed.
Update iOS and AirTag Firmware
AirTag firmware updates automatically when connected to an updated iPhone. To ensure it updates:
- Keep your iPhone on the latest iOS version.
- Keep both devices close together for at least 15 minutes.
You can check the firmware version in Find My → Items → AirTag → Info.
Reset the AirTag Completely
If none of the above works, reset your AirTag to factory settings:
- Remove the battery cover.
- Take out the battery.
- Reinsert it and press until you hear a sound.
- Repeat this five times, removing and reinserting the battery each time until you hear five sounds in total.
- After the fifth sound, reattach the cover.
Now it’s ready to pair as a new AirTag.
When to Contact Apple Support
If your AirTag still won’t connect after all troubleshooting:
- Check if it appears under Find My → Items.
- If not, there may be a hardware issue.
Visit an Apple Store or contact Apple Support for inspection or replacement.
