HP printer error code E3 typically indicates a carriage jam – meaning the printhead or cartridge carriage is stuck or unable to move properly. This prevents the printer from operating until the issue is resolved.
Check for Physical Obstructions
1. Turn Off and Unplug the Printer
- Power off the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the back and wait about 30 seconds.
2. Open the Cartridge Access Door
- Carefully open the printer’s top or cartridge access area.
- Wait for the carriage to stop moving (if it moved at all before the error appeared).
3. Look for Jams or Obstructions
- Remove any visible paper jams or foreign objects (like paper clips or bits of torn paper).
- Gently move the carriage left and right to check for free movement.
Inspect the Cartridges
4. Reseat the Ink Cartridges
- Remove each ink cartridge carefully.
- Check for debris or ink buildup on the electrical contacts.
- Reinsert the cartridges securely into their correct slots.
5. Clean Cartridge Contacts
- Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
- Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge and corresponding contacts in the printer.
- Let dry before reinserting.
Restart the Printer
6. Plug In and Power On
- Close the cartridge access door.
- Plug the printer back in and power it on.
- Wait to see if the E3 error clears.
Reset the Printer
7. Perform a Full Reset
- Disconnect the power cord with the printer turned on.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power and turn the printer back on.
Update Firmware and Drivers
8. Use HP Smart or HP Support
- Open the HP Smart app or visit support.hp.com.
- Check for firmware updates and install them if available.
If the E3 error persists after these steps, your printer may need service. Contact HP Support for further assistance, especially if the printer is under warranty.
