HP Printer Cannot Align Printheads – How to Fix it

If your HP printer cannot align the printheads, it can affect print quality and lead to misaligned text or images. This issue may be due to hardware problems, old cartridges, driver issues, or software glitches. Follow these steps to resolve it.

Check Ink Levels

Low Ink Can Interrupt Alignment

  • Access printer status from the control panel or HP Smart app.
  • If ink levels are low, replace the cartridge(s) before aligning again.

Use Genuine HP Ink Cartridges

Non-HP Cartridges May Cause Alignment Errors

  • Ensure you are using genuine HP cartridges compatible with your printer model.
  • Non-original or refilled cartridges can interfere with alignment functionality.

Clean the Printheads

Dirty Printheads Can Cause Alignment Failure

  1. Use the printer’s built-in Clean Printhead tool:
    • Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead
  2. If needed, repeat the cleaning process 2–3 times.
  3. After cleaning, retry the Align Printhead process.

Manually Align the Printheads

Perform Alignment from Software

  • Open HP Printer Assistant (Windows) or HP Utility (Mac).
  • Select Maintain Your Printer > Align Printheads.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions and print the alignment page.

Replace Problematic Cartridges

Faulty Cartridges Can Interrupt Alignment

  • If the printer shows which cartridge is causing the issue, try replacing just that one.
  • Re-run alignment after installing a new cartridge.

Restart the Printer

Clear Temporary Glitches

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from power.
  • Wait for 1–2 minutes, then plug it back in and power it on.
  • Retry the alignment process.

Update Printer Firmware

Ensure Compatibility with Cartridges

  • Visit the HP Support website for your printer model.
  • Download and install the latest firmware update.
  • Firmware fixes may resolve bugs affecting the alignment routine.

Use Clean, White Paper

Paper Quality Affects Alignment Page Detection

  • Load plain white letter-size paper in the tray.
  • Avoid colored or glossy paper during alignment.
  • Ensure the paper is not curled, wrinkled, or misfed.

Scan the Alignment Page Correctly

Required for Completing the Process

  • After printing the alignment page, follow instructions to place the page face-down on the scanner glass.
  • Press OK or Scan when prompted.
  • If the scan fails, clean the scanner glass and try again.

Reset the Printer

Restore Factory Settings

  • Navigate to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults (option names may vary).
  • Once reset, reinstall cartridges if needed and try the alignment again.

Service the Printer

Hardware Failure

  • If all steps fail, there could be a problem with the printhead assembly or scanner sensor.
  • Contact HP support or visit an authorized service center.
