HP Printer Cannot Print Black Ink – How to Fix it

If your HP printer is not printing black ink, the issue could be due to cartridge problems, clogged printheads, software glitches, or incorrect settings. Follow the steps below to troubleshoot and fix the issue.

Check Ink Cartridge Status

Ensure Cartridge Is Not Empty

  • Open the printer’s front panel and check the black ink cartridge.
  • Replace it if the ink level is low or empty.

Verify Cartridge Installation

  • Turn off the printer and open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove and reinstall the black ink cartridge securely.
  • Ensure it clicks into place properly.

Use Genuine HP Cartridges

  • Non-HP or refilled cartridges may cause print quality issues.
  • If you’re using a third-party cartridge, try replacing it with a genuine HP cartridge.

Clean the Printhead

Use Printer’s Built-in Utility

  • On the printer control panel or software:
    • Go to Settings > Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
  • Run the cleaning cycle and print a test page.
  • Repeat up to 2-3 times if necessary.

Manual Cleaning

  • Remove the cartridges.
  • Use a lint-free cloth dampened with warm water to gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge and printhead.
  • Let them dry completely before reinstalling.

Align the Printhead

  • Navigate to the printer menu or software utility.
  • Go to Settings > Tools > Align Printhead.
  • Follow the prompts to align and calibrate the printhead for optimal printing.

Run a Print Quality Diagnostic

  • From the printer control panel or HP Smart app:
    • Print a quality diagnostic report.
    • This can help identify if only the black ink is affected.

Set Black Ink as Default in Print Settings

On Windows

  • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click your HP printer > Printing Preferences.
  • Ensure that “Print in Grayscale” or “Black Ink Only” is properly configured.

On macOS

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Select your printer and check the print options in the Print dialog window.

Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers

  • Visit HP’s official website and download the latest driver for your printer model.
  • Uninstall the current driver from your computer before reinstalling the new one.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.

Replace the Printhead (if applicable)

  • Some HP models use a removable printhead.
  • If cleaning and alignment don’t help, the printhead may be faulty and require replacement.

Contact HP Support

  • If none of the above steps restore black ink printing, your printer may need servicing.
  • Check warranty status and contact HP customer support for further assistance.
