HP Printer Can’t Find WiFi – How to Fix it

If your HP printer can’t find your WiFi network, it may be due to connectivity issues, incorrect settings, or firmware problems. Follow the steps below to identify and resolve the issue.

Check WiFi Network Availability

Ensure WiFi Is Turned On

  • Make sure your WiFi router is powered on and functioning.
  • Check that other devices (phones, laptops) can connect to the WiFi network.

Move Printer Closer to Router

  • Place the printer within range of the router.
  • Avoid placing the printer near walls, microwaves, or other electronic interference sources.

Check WiFi Network Name (SSID)

  • Ensure your printer is searching for the correct SSID.
  • If the SSID is hidden, you’ll need to enter it manually during setup.

Restart Devices

Restart Printer and Router

  • Turn off your HP printer and unplug the router for 30 seconds.
  • Turn them both back on and try connecting again.

Connect Using HP Smart App

Set Up via HP Smart

  • Download the HP Smart app on your phone or computer.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts to connect the printer to WiFi.
  • Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your device during setup.

Verify Printer Wireless Settings

Use Wireless Setup Wizard

  • On printers with a display:
    • Go to Settings > Network > Wireless Setup Wizard.
    • Select your WiFi network and enter the password.
  • On printers without a display:
    • Press and hold the WiFi button until the wireless light starts blinking.
    • Press the WPS button on your router within 2 minutes.

Check Router Settings

Enable 2.4GHz Band

  • Some HP printers don’t support 5GHz networks.
  • Make sure the 2.4GHz band is enabled on your router.

Disable MAC Address Filtering

  • If enabled, MAC filtering may block the printer from connecting.
  • Add the printer’s MAC address to the allowed list or disable filtering.

Increase DHCP IP Address Range

  • Ensure your router has available IP addresses for new devices to connect.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Visit HP’s support site and download the latest firmware for your printer model.
  • Updating firmware can resolve bugs related to network connectivity.

Reset Network Settings on Printer

  • On the printer, navigate to Settings > Network Settings > Restore Network Defaults.
  • After resetting, try setting up the WiFi connection again.

Use USB or Ethernet as a Temporary Solution

  • If WiFi setup continues to fail, connect the printer using USB or Ethernet temporarily.
  • This allows you to complete setup and potentially update firmware or drivers.

Contact HP Support

  • If your printer still can’t detect WiFi, it may have a hardware issue.
  • Check warranty status and reach out to HP support for additional help.
