HP Printer Cannot Be Found on a Wireless Network – How to Fix it

If your HP printer cannot be found on a wireless network, it’s usually due to connectivity issues, misconfigured settings, or network incompatibility. Follow the steps below to resolve the issue and connect your printer successfully.

Check Printer and Network Readiness

Ensure the Printer is Powered On

  • Confirm the printer is turned on and not in sleep mode.
  • Look for errors on the display panel.

Verify Wireless Connection

  • Make sure the printer is within range of your Wi-Fi router.
  • Check that the wireless light or icon on the printer is solid (not blinking).
  • If blinking or off, the printer is not connected to Wi-Fi.

Restart Devices

Power Cycle All Equipment

  • Turn off the printer, computer, and router.
  • Wait 30 seconds.
  • Turn on the router first, then the printer, and finally the computer.

Reconnect the Printer to Wi-Fi

Use Wireless Setup Wizard (Touchscreen Models)

  • Go to Settings > Network > Wireless Setup Wizard.
  • Select your Wi-Fi network and enter the correct password.

Use WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)

  • Press and hold the Wi-Fi button on the printer until it blinks.
  • Press the WPS button on your router within 2 minutes.
  • Wait for the wireless light to stop blinking and remain steady.

Use HP Smart App (No Display Screen)

  • Install the HP Smart app on your phone or PC.
  • Follow on-screen instructions to connect the printer to your wireless network.

Confirm the Network is Functioning

Check Network Settings

  • Make sure the Wi-Fi network is functioning and not hidden.
  • Verify that other devices can connect to the same Wi-Fi network.

Check Printer IP Address

Print a Network Configuration Page

  • Use the printer control panel to print this report.
  • Confirm the printer has a valid IP address assigned.

Add Printer Manually Using IP Address

On Windows

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners > Add a printer.
  • Click The printer I want isn’t listed > Add a printer using TCP/IP address.
  • Enter the IP address listed on the configuration page.

On macOS

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Click the + icon and choose IP, then enter the printer’s IP address.

Update or Reinstall Printer Software

Get the Latest Drivers

  • Visit HP Support and enter your printer model.
  • Download and install the latest drivers or the HP Smart app.

Disable Firewalls and Security Software Temporarily

Ensure They’re Not Blocking Connection

  • Temporarily disable any third-party firewall or antivirus software.
  • Try to detect the printer again.
  • Re-enable the firewall after testing.

Reset Printer Network Settings

Restore Defaults

  • On the printer: go to Settings > Network Settings > Restore Network Defaults.
  • Then reconnect to Wi-Fi using the Wireless Setup Wizard or HP Smart app.

If the printer still cannot be found on the wireless network, check for router limitations such as MAC address filtering or dual-band confusion (2.4GHz vs 5GHz). You may also try connecting via USB or Ethernet as a temporary solution.
