Can’t Play Sound on AirTag

If your AirTag can’t play sound, it usually points to a connection, firmware, or hardware issue. Since sound is essential for locating your AirTag through the Find My app, fixing this problem ensures you can track your items effectively.

Check the AirTag’s Battery

A low or dead battery is the most common reason your AirTag can’t play sound.

  • Open the AirTag by pressing and twisting the stainless-steel back cover counterclockwise.
  • Remove the CR2032 coin cell battery and reinsert it until you hear a click.
  • If no sound plays, replace the battery with a new CR2032 battery (avoid batteries with a bitter coating, as they may interfere with connection).
  • Close the cover by aligning the three tabs and twisting clockwise until it locks.

Ensure Bluetooth and Connection Are Working

The AirTag must be within Bluetooth range and properly connected to your iPhone to trigger sound playback.

  • Keep the AirTag within 10–15 meters of your iPhone.
  • Turn Bluetooth off and back on under Settings > Bluetooth.
  • Restart your iPhone to refresh the connection.
  • Open the Find My app → Items tab → select your AirTag → tap Play Sound.

If you see a message like “Cannot Connect to AirTag”, reconnect the AirTag by moving closer or resetting it.

Check Location and Network Settings

Sound commands are sent through the Find My network, which depends on your iPhone’s settings.

  • Ensure Location Services are on:
Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services → turn on.
  • Make sure the Find My app has location access set to While Using the App.
  • Confirm Find My network is enabled under Settings > [Your Name] > Find My > Find My iPhone > Find My network.

Reset the AirTag

If your AirTag remains silent, resetting it can help resolve firmware or pairing errors.

  1. Remove the AirTag from your Apple ID:
    • Open Find MyItems → tap your AirTag → scroll down → Remove Item.
  2. Reset manually:
    • Remove the battery.
    • Reinsert it and press down until you hear a sound.
    • Repeat this five times until you hear a fifth tone, which confirms a full reset.
  3. Bring it near your iPhone and follow the on-screen setup instructions.

Update iOS and AirTag Firmware

Outdated software may prevent AirTag features, including sound playback, from working correctly.

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest iOS version.
  • AirTag firmware updates automatically when it’s near your iPhone and connected to the internet, so leave it close to your phone for a while to allow updates.

Check Physical Sound Port

The AirTag’s speaker is located beneath its white plastic surface.

  • Inspect the AirTag for dirt, debris, or damage that could block sound output.
  • Avoid using liquids or sharp tools to clean it; gently wipe the surface with a dry microfiber cloth.

Test with Another iPhone or Account

Try playing sound from a different iPhone or iPad linked to the same Apple ID.
If it works on another device, your main iPhone may have a software or Bluetooth issue that needs resetting.

Contact Apple Support

If none of the above steps restore sound functionality, the AirTag may have a speaker hardware fault.

  • Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for diagnostic testing.
  • If it’s under warranty, Apple can replace the AirTag at no additional cost.
