When your AirTag can’t find a signal, it means it’s having trouble connecting to your iPhone or the Find My network. This can happen due to Bluetooth issues, distance, low battery, or a problem with your phone’s settings. Here’s how to identify and fix the problem.
Check Bluetooth and Location Services
Ensure Bluetooth Is Turned On
Your AirTag connects to your iPhone using Bluetooth.
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure it’s on.
- If it’s already enabled, toggle it off and back on to refresh the connection.
- Move the AirTag close to your iPhone (within 10 meters) and check if it reconnects.
Enable Location Services
AirTags also need Location Services to report their position.
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure it’s on.
- Scroll down and verify the Find My app has permission set to While Using the App.
Check the AirTag Battery
A low or dead battery can cause your AirTag to lose signal.
- Press and twist the stainless-steel back cover counterclockwise to open it.
- Remove and reinsert the CR2032 coin cell battery until you hear a sound.
- If there’s no sound, replace it with a new CR2032 battery.
- Reassemble the AirTag by aligning the tabs and twisting the cover clockwise.
Ensure You’re Within Range
If your AirTag can’t find a signal, it may be too far from any Apple device on the Find My network.
- Stay within 10–15 meters of the AirTag when searching with your iPhone.
- Avoid metal barriers, concrete walls, or other obstructions that block Bluetooth signals.
- If you’re trying to locate it from afar, make sure Find My network is enabled so other Apple devices can detect it.
To check:
- Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Find My > Find My iPhone > Find My network and make sure it’s turned on.
Restart Your iPhone
Temporary connection glitches can prevent communication between your iPhone and AirTag.
- Restart your iPhone to reset Bluetooth and network services.
- After restarting, open Find My, select your AirTag, and tap Play Sound to test if the signal is restored.
Reset the AirTag
If the AirTag still can’t find a signal, perform a manual reset.
- Remove the AirTag from your Apple ID:
- Open Find My → Items → select your AirTag → tap Remove Item.
- Reset the AirTag manually:
- Remove the battery.
- Reinsert it and press down until you hear a sound.
- Repeat this process five times, until you hear a fifth tone.
- Bring it close to your iPhone and set it up again.
Update iOS and AirTag Firmware
Older iOS versions or outdated AirTag firmware may cause connectivity problems.
- Update your iPhone by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
- AirTag firmware updates automatically when it’s near your iPhone and connected to the internet.
- Keep the AirTag close to your iPhone for several hours to allow the update to complete.
Avoid Wireless Interference
Other wireless devices can disrupt your AirTag’s Bluetooth signal.
- Turn off or move away from nearby Bluetooth speakers, headphones, or Wi-Fi routers during troubleshooting.
- Avoid using your AirTag in environments with high radio interference, such as airports or industrial areas.
Test the AirTag with Another Device
Try pairing the AirTag with a different iPhone or iPad signed in to your Apple ID.
- If it connects successfully, the issue may be with your primary iPhone’s Bluetooth or settings.
- Reset your network settings if necessary:
Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Check Apple’s System Status
If Find My network or iCloud services are experiencing outages, your AirTag may temporarily lose signal.
- Visit Apple’s System Status page and check if Find My is marked as available.
Contact Apple Support
If your AirTag still can’t find a signal after trying all steps, it could have a hardware or antenna issue.
- Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for diagnostics.
- If it’s under warranty, Apple can repair or replace the AirTag free of charge.
