AirTag Cannot Share

If your AirTag cannot share with another person, it’s because Apple currently restricts AirTags to a single Apple ID at a time. Each AirTag is designed for personal use and cannot be shared between accounts for privacy and security reasons. However, there are several workarounds and steps you can take to allow others to locate or manage an item linked to your AirTag.

Understand Why AirTags Can’t Be Shared

AirTags are tied to the owner’s Apple ID when set up. This design prevents unauthorized tracking by ensuring only the registered owner can view the AirTag’s location.
Because of this:

  • You can’t add multiple users to one AirTag.
  • You can’t share an AirTag directly through Family Sharing or the Find My app.
  • Only the owner’s device can see the AirTag’s real-time location.

Option 1: Transfer the AirTag to Another Person

If you want someone else to use the AirTag:

  1. Remove it from your Apple ID:
    • Open the Find My app → Items → select your AirTag → scroll down → tap Remove Item.
  2. Reset the AirTag:
    • Remove the battery.
    • Reinsert it and press down until you hear a sound.
    • Repeat this step five times until you hear a fifth tone, confirming a full reset.
  3. Have the other person pair the AirTag:
    • Bring the AirTag near their iPhone.
    • Follow the on-screen setup instructions.

Once transferred, the new user becomes the registered owner, and you will no longer have access to its location.

Option 2: Use Family Sharing to Share Location (Not AirTag Access)

While you can’t share the AirTag itself, you can share your device’s location through Family Sharing.
This helps others know where you are if the AirTag is tracking something you carry (like your keys or bag).

To enable this:

  • Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Family Sharing > Location Sharing.
  • Turn on Share My Location.
  • Family members will now see your device’s location in the Find My app, even though they won’t see the AirTag directly.

Option 3: Share the AirTag’s Last Known Location

If someone needs to find an item with your AirTag attached, you can share the last known location manually:

  • Open Find My > Items → select the AirTag.
  • View the map and share the location via Messages, WhatsApp, or Email.
  • The recipient can use the shared map or address to find the item’s location.

This doesn’t give them live tracking but helps coordinate retrieval.

Option 4: Add the Person’s Contact Info in Lost Mode

When an AirTag is in Lost Mode, anyone who finds it can see the owner’s contact info.

  • Open Find My > Items > [AirTag] > Enable Lost Mode.
  • Enter a phone number or email address where you can be reached.
  • When someone taps the AirTag with their iPhone or Android (via NFC), your contact info appears.

This is the only form of indirect “sharing” supported by Apple for security purposes.

Option 5: Use a Shared Device Instead

If you and another person frequently track the same item:

  • Set up the AirTag using a shared iPhone or iPad that both of you can access (for example, a family iPad).
  • Sign in with the same Apple ID on that shared device.
Both users can then open the Find My app and see the AirTag’s location.

Option 6: Consider Alternatives That Support Sharing

If you need multiple users to track one item in real time, AirTag may not be the best option.
Alternative trackers that support shared access include:

  • Tile Trackers (via shared accounts)
  • Samsung Galaxy SmartTags (for Android users)
  • Chipolo ONE Spot (integrates with Find My but has limited sharing flexibility)

These allow group tracking without transferring ownership.
