If your AirPods won’t show up in Bluetooth, they aren’t entering pairing mode or aren’t being detected by your device. This can be caused by a low battery, Bluetooth interference, software glitches, or a hardware issue in the charging case. Follow these steps to make your AirPods appear in your Bluetooth list and connect correctly.
Check AirPods and Case Battery
AirPods need enough charge to appear in Bluetooth.
- Place both AirPods in the charging case.
- Connect the case to a Lightning cable or wireless charger.
- Wait at least 30 minutes before trying to pair again.
- Open the lid – if there’s no light, the case might not be charging.
If the status light doesn’t respond, test a different cable or power adapter.
Ensure Bluetooth Is Turned On
Check your device’s Bluetooth settings.
On iPhone or iPad
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth.
- Toggle Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, then turn it on again.
On Mac
- Open System Settings > Bluetooth.
- Ensure Bluetooth is enabled.
- If you don’t see the Bluetooth icon, restart your Mac.
Once Bluetooth is on, open the AirPods lid near your device and wait to see if they appear.
Put AirPods Into Pairing Mode Manually
If the AirPods don’t show automatically, try pairing manually.
- Place both AirPods in the case.
- Open the lid.
- Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the light flashes white.
- On your device, open Bluetooth settings and look for your AirPods in the list.
If the AirPods don’t flash white, reset them before trying again.
Reset the AirPods
A reset clears all existing connections and fixes pairing issues.
- Place both AirPods in the case and close the lid for 30 seconds.
- Open the lid.
- On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the i next to your AirPods.
- Choose Forget This Device.
- With the lid open, hold the setup button for 15 seconds, until the light flashes amber, then white.
- Try pairing again by opening the lid near your iPhone or selecting the AirPods in Bluetooth settings.
If the AirPods still don’t appear, check for other interference sources.
Check for Wireless Interference
Nearby devices can interfere with Bluetooth connections.
- Move away from Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones, or other Bluetooth devices.
- Turn off Bluetooth on any nearby computers, tablets, or phones.
- Try pairing the AirPods within a few inches of the target device.
This minimizes signal overlap and increases detection success.
Test With Another Device
To see if the issue is with your AirPods or your phone:
- Try connecting the AirPods to another iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the second device.
- Put the AirPods in pairing mode again.
If they appear on another device, the problem is likely with your primary device’s Bluetooth settings.
Restart Your Device
Restarting clears temporary Bluetooth conflicts.
- On iPhone: Hold the power and volume buttons → slide to power off → wait 10 seconds → power back on.
- On Mac: Click the Apple menu > Restart.
Once restarted, reopen Bluetooth settings and try again.
Update Software
Outdated iOS or macOS versions can cause Bluetooth detection issues.
- On iPhone/iPad: Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- On Mac: Go to System Settings > General > Software Update.
After updating, reboot your device and repeat the pairing steps.
Clean the AirPods and Charging Case
Dust or debris on charging contacts can stop the AirPods from communicating with the case.
- Use a dry, soft cloth to wipe the AirPods and case.
- Gently clean the metal contacts inside the slots with a dry cotton swab.
- Make sure both AirPods sit firmly in the case.
If one AirPod isn’t seated correctly, the pairing signal might not initiate.
Check if AirPods Are Linked to Another Apple ID
If your AirPods are connected to another Apple ID, they won’t appear in Bluetooth for new devices.
- Ask the previous owner (if used) to remove the AirPods from their Apple ID using Find My.
- Once unlinked, reset the AirPods and pair them to your own device.
Without removal, Activation Lock prevents new pairing.
When AirPods Still Don’t Show Up
If your AirPods remain missing from Bluetooth after all steps:
- The charging case may have a hardware or firmware failure.
- The AirPods batteries may be fully drained or damaged.
- Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for inspection.
