AirPods Won’t Flash White

If your AirPods won’t flash white, they’re unable to enter pairing mode. This usually means there’s an issue with the charging case, the AirPods’ connection points, or an internal software glitch. The white flashing light is essential for pairing – it indicates that the AirPods are ready to connect to a device. Here’s how to fix the problem.

Check the AirPods and Case Battery

The AirPods need sufficient charge to enter pairing mode.

  1. Place both AirPods in the charging case.
  2. Connect the case to a Lightning cable or wireless charger.
  3. Leave it charging for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Then, open the lid and check for a light.

If there’s no light at all, the case may not be getting power, or the battery could be fully drained.

Inspect and Clean the Charging Contacts

Dirty charging contacts can prevent the AirPods from connecting to the case, which stops them from resetting or flashing white.

  • Clean the bottom metal connectors on both AirPods with a dry, soft cloth.
  • Use a dry cotton swab to gently clean the charging ports inside the case.
  • Make sure each AirPod clicks into place magnetically.
  • Avoid using liquids or compressed air.

Once cleaned, return the AirPods to the case and try again.

Reset the AirPods Properly

If the AirPods have power but still don’t flash white, a reset may fix the issue.

  1. Place both AirPods in the case and close the lid for 30 seconds.
  2. Open the lid.
  3. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth.
  4. Tap the i next to your AirPods and select Forget This Device.
  5. With the lid open, press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for 15 seconds, until the light flashes amber, then white.

If the light never flashes white, the case may not be communicating with the AirPods properly.

Try Charging and Resetting Again

If there’s still no white light after the reset attempt:

  • Charge the AirPods and case for at least one hour.
  • Make sure the charging cable and adapter are genuine Apple products or MFi-certified.
  • After charging, repeat the reset process with the lid open and both AirPods inserted.

Sometimes it takes multiple attempts after a full charge for the AirPods to respond.

Check for Bluetooth Conflicts

Nearby devices may interfere with pairing.

  • Turn off Bluetooth on all devices except the one you’re pairing with.
  • Keep the AirPods case next to your iPhone or iPad.
  • Open the lid and wait a few seconds to see if the animation appears on screen.

If your iPhone detects them without flashing white, they might still connect successfully – but resetting is recommended for long-term stability.

Examine the Setup Button

If pressing the setup button does nothing, it could be jammed or damaged.

  • Press it firmly for 15 seconds while the lid is open.
  • If there’s no click or resistance, the button mechanism may be faulty.
  • Try gently cleaning around it with a soft brush or dry cloth.

If the button doesn’t respond after cleaning, the case likely needs repair or replacement.

Test With Another Device

Try pairing your AirPods with a different iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

  1. Open the Bluetooth settings on the other device.
  2. Place the AirPods in the case, open the lid, and hold the setup button.
  3. Watch for the AirPods to appear in the Bluetooth list.

If they pair without flashing white, your main device may have Bluetooth issues. Restart that device and try again.

Update iOS or macOS

Software bugs can prevent devices from detecting AirPods during pairing.

  • On iPhone or iPad: Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • On Mac: Go to System Settings > General > Software Update.

After updating, reboot your device and retry pairing with the AirPods.

When AirPods Still Won’t Flash White

If none of the above solutions work:

  • The charging case firmware or battery may be defective.
  • The AirPods themselves may not be recognized by the case.
  • Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for service.
