AirPods Has Orange Light

If your AirPods show an orange (amber) light on the charging case, it indicates that there’s an issue with charging, pairing, or battery status. The orange light can have different meanings depending on whether it’s blinking or steady. Understanding what it means helps you fix the issue quickly.

Understand What the Orange Light Means

Steady Orange Light

  • The AirPods or charging case need charging.
  • It means the case has less than one full charge remaining.

Blinking Orange Light

  • Indicates a pairing error or connection problem.
  • Your AirPods may need to be reset and reconnected to your device.

Charge the AirPods and Case

  1. Place both AirPods in the charging case.
  2. Connect the case to a power source using a Lightning, USB-C, or MagSafe charger.
  3. Let them charge for at least 20 minutes.
  4. Open the lid and check the light again:
    • Green: Fully charged.
    • Orange: Still charging or low battery.

If the light doesn’t change after charging, try another cable or adapter.

Check Charging Connections

Clean the Case and Charging Contacts

Dirt or debris on the charging contacts can stop charging.

  • Clean the inside of the case and the metal connectors using a soft, dry brush.
  • Gently wipe the bottom of each AirPod stem.
  • Avoid using liquids or compressed air.

Test Different Power Sources

  • Plug into a different wall adapter or USB port.
  • If using wireless charging, confirm that the charging indicator lights up when placed on the pad.

If the orange light persists, the case may not be charging properly.

Reset the AirPods

A blinking orange light typically signals a pairing or firmware error.

  1. Place both AirPods in the charging case.
  2. Close the lid and wait 30 seconds.
  3. Open the lid.
  4. Hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds until the light flashes amber, then white.
  5. Reconnect your AirPods by opening the lid near your iPhone.

This reset clears any software glitches causing the orange light.

Check Bluetooth Connection

If your AirPods are blinking orange while trying to connect:

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone.
  • Tap the (i) next to your AirPods and select Forget This Device.
  • Reconnect by holding the setup button until the light flashes white.

If the blinking continues, try pairing them with another Apple device to verify if the issue is with the AirPods or your phone.

Update Firmware and iOS

Outdated firmware or iOS versions can cause charging and pairing errors.

  • Update iPhone: Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • Update AirPods Firmware: Keep AirPods connected to your iPhone, in the case, and charging. The firmware updates automatically within a few hours.

Once updated, try resetting and reconnecting again.

Check for Overheating

If your AirPods case feels unusually warm and shows an orange light, it may have stopped charging temporarily to protect the battery.

  • Remove it from the charger.
  • Let it cool for 10–15 minutes.
  • Then reconnect it to power and check if the light changes to green after charging.

Try a Different Charging Cable or Adapter

A faulty cable can cause the case to show an orange light without actually charging.

  • Use a verified Apple Lightning or USB-C cable.
  • Try charging another device with the same cable to confirm it’s working.
  • If the other device charges fine, but your AirPods don’t, the issue may be with the case.

Inspect for Hardware or Battery Issues

If the orange light remains even after charging, cleaning, and resetting:

  • The charging case battery might be worn out or damaged.
  • Water exposure or drops can also cause hardware malfunctions.

In this situation, contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for a diagnostic test or replacement.
