AirPods Has Low Volume

If your AirPods have low volume, it can be caused by blocked speakers, software issues, or incorrect audio settings. Low sound output is a common issue and can usually be fixed with a few adjustments and clean-up steps.

Check and Clean AirPods

Remove Dirt or Earwax

Blocked speaker grills are one of the most common causes of low volume.

  • Use a soft, dry brush or dry cotton swab to gently clean the mesh on each AirPod.
  • Avoid using water or sharp tools.
  • For stubborn buildup, lightly dampen a cloth with 70% isopropyl alcohol and wipe the surface (not the speaker holes).

After cleaning, test the volume again.

Adjust Volume and Audio Balance

Check Volume Settings

  • On your iPhone, increase the volume with the Volume Up button.
  • Open Control Center and make sure the AirPods are the active audio output.
  • Ensure Volume Limit and Sound Check are turned off:
    1. Go to Settings > Music.
    2. Turn off Sound Check.
    3. Under Playback, make sure Volume Limit is set to maximum.

Adjust Left-Right Balance

If one AirPod sounds quieter than the other:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual.
  2. Make sure the Balance slider is centered between left and right.

Disable Headphone Safety Features

Apple’s volume protection settings can limit output volume.

  • Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety.
  • Turn off Reduce Loud Sounds.
  • If enabled, this feature may automatically lower volume levels during playback.

Reset Bluetooth Connection

Sometimes, a bad Bluetooth connection can cause low or uneven sound.

  1. Put AirPods in the charging case and close the lid for 30 seconds.
  2. Open the lid, then go to Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone.
  3. Tap the (i) next to your AirPods and select Forget This Device.
  4. Reconnect your AirPods by holding the setup button until the light flashes white.

Test the sound after reconnecting.

Reset AirPods Completely

If reconnecting doesn’t help, reset them fully:

  1. Place both AirPods in the case and close the lid for 30 seconds.
  2. Open the lid and press the setup button for about 15 seconds until the light flashes amber, then white.
  3. Reconnect your AirPods to your iPhone or other device.

This removes any stored settings that could affect volume levels.

Check Audio Settings in Apps

Some apps have their own volume controls separate from system volume.

  • Check the volume sliders in Spotify, YouTube, or Apple Music.
  • Make sure the app isn’t limiting playback volume.

If using an equalizer app, reset it to default settings.

Clean iPhone Audio Settings

A software glitch can affect audio output. Restart your iPhone and test again.
If the issue continues, reset your network and Bluetooth settings:

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Then reconnect your AirPods and check if the volume improves.

Turn Off Low Power Mode

Low Power Mode can sometimes affect Bluetooth performance.

  • Go to Settings > Battery and turn off Low Power Mode.
  • Reconnect your AirPods and test the audio.

Update Firmware and iOS

Outdated firmware can cause performance or audio issues.

  • Update iPhone: Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • Update AirPods Firmware: Keep AirPods connected to your iPhone and charging. Firmware updates install automatically when connected and charging near your device.

Try Another Device

To determine if the issue is with your AirPods or your device:

  • Connect your AirPods to another iPhone, iPad, or computer.
  • If the volume is normal, the issue is on your original device.
  • If the volume is still low, it’s likely due to buildup or hardware damage in the AirPods.

Contact Apple Support

If none of the above steps restore normal volume, the AirPods’ speaker or internal amplifier may be damaged.
Visit an Apple Store or contact Apple Support for a professional diagnostic or replacement.
