If your AirPods won’t turn on or charge, the issue is usually related to a dead battery, dirty charging contacts, a faulty charging case, or a damaged cable. To fix this problem, you need to check the power source, clean the hardware, and ensure the AirPods are correctly placed in the case.

Check the Power Source and Cable

Start by confirming that your charger and cable are working properly.

  • Plug the Lightning cable into another device to verify that it provides power.
  • Try using a different Lightning cable and wall adapter.
  • If you’re charging wirelessly, ensure the Qi-certified charger is correctly aligned and functioning.
  • Avoid cheap or third-party cables that might not supply consistent power.

If the charging case light does not turn on, the issue may be with the cable, charger, or port.

Charge the AirPods and Case for at Least 30 Minutes

If both AirPods and the case are completely drained, it may take several minutes before the charging indicator turns on.

  1. Place both AirPods in the charging case.
  2. Connect the case to power using the Lightning cable or a wireless charger.
  3. Leave them to charge for at least 30 minutes.
  4. After that, open the lid and check if the status light turns amber or green.

If the light remains off, continue to the next steps.

Clean the Charging Contacts

Dirt, lint, or corrosion can block the electrical connection between the AirPods and the case.

  • Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to clean the AirPods and charging case.
  • Gently clean the metal charging contacts inside the case with a dry cotton swab.
  • Do not use liquids or compressed air.
  • Check that each AirPod clicks firmly into its slot.

Once clean, return the AirPods to the case and check for the charging light again.

Check for Proper Placement

Each AirPod must make full contact with its charging pin.

  • Insert the AirPods correctly until you feel a magnetic click.
  • If only one AirPod charges, inspect the other side of the case for debris.
  • Close the lid and wait a few seconds, then open it near your iPhone to check the charging status.

Improper placement is one of the most common causes of charging failure.

Reset the AirPods

A reset can fix software or charging recognition errors.

  1. Place both AirPods in the charging case and close the lid for 30 seconds.
  2. Open the lid.
  3. On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the i next to your AirPods, and select Forget This Device.
  4. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds until the status light flashes amber, then white.
  5. Reconnect your AirPods by opening the lid near your iPhone.

After resetting, check whether the AirPods now respond and charge correctly.

Try Both Wired and Wireless Charging

If your charging case supports wireless charging:

  • Place it on a Qi-certified charger with the status light facing up.
  • Align it properly on the charging pad.

If it doesn’t charge wirelessly, try connecting the Lightning cable directly.
If wired charging works but wireless doesn’t, the issue is likely with the charging coil.
If neither method works, the problem may be with the charging circuitry inside the case.

Update Device Software and AirPods Firmware

Outdated firmware can sometimes prevent AirPods from charging properly.

  1. Connect your AirPods to your iPhone.
  2. Place them in the case and connect it to power.
  3. Keep the case near your iPhone with an internet connection.
  4. Leave them together for at least 30 minutes to trigger an automatic firmware update.

Ensure your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS or iPadOS for best compatibility.

Check for Overheating

If the AirPods or case feel warm, charging may pause automatically.

  • Move them to a cool, dry place.
  • Wait 10–15 minutes before attempting to charge again.
  • Avoid charging in direct sunlight or inside a car.

Apple’s built-in temperature protection will temporarily stop charging if overheating is detected.

Test With Another Power Source

Try using a different USB port, outlet, or power adapter.

  • Plug the Lightning cable into a computer USB port or a different wall adapter.
  • If the case begins charging, the original power source is faulty.
  • If there’s still no response, the case might need servicing.

When AirPods Still Won’t Turn On or Charge

If your AirPods remain unresponsive after all troubleshooting steps:

  • The batteries inside the AirPods or charging case may have degraded.
  • The charging port may be damaged or corroded.
  • Visit support.apple.com or an Apple Store for service.
  • Check your warranty coverage at checkcoverage.apple.com.
