AirPods Cannot Pair

When your AirPods cannot pair with your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or other devices, the problem usually lies in Bluetooth connectivity, outdated firmware, or software conflicts. Here are the most effective steps and solutions to fix pairing issues with AirPods.

Check Basic Requirements

Before troubleshooting, ensure the following conditions are met:

  • Bluetooth is turned on for the device you’re pairing with.
  • The device’s software is up to date.
  • AirPods are charged and placed inside their charging case.
  • The device is within 10 meters (33 feet) of the AirPods.

If any of these requirements are not met, the AirPods may not connect properly.

Reset the AirPods

A factory reset often resolves pairing problems caused by software glitches.

How to Reset AirPods or AirPods Pro

  1. Place both AirPods in their charging case.
  2. Close the lid and wait 30 seconds.
  3. Open the lid.
  4. On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the i icon next to your AirPods.
  5. Tap Forget This Device, then confirm.
  6. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light flashes amber, then white.
  7. Reconnect the AirPods by opening the lid near your device and following the on-screen prompts.

This process clears all existing connections and creates a new pairing profile.

Ensure Bluetooth Is Working Correctly

On iPhone or iPad

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth.
  • Toggle Bluetooth off and on again.
  • Try connecting a different Bluetooth device to verify Bluetooth functionality.

On Mac

  • Open System Settings > Bluetooth.
  • Turn Bluetooth off and on.
  • If Bluetooth appears unavailable, restart the Mac.

Check for Interference

Wireless interference can prevent AirPods from pairing.

  • Move away from Wi-Fi routers, microwaves, or other Bluetooth devices.
  • Avoid pairing near multiple active Bluetooth accessories.
  • Ensure there are no metal objects blocking the AirPods or case.

Update Firmware and Device Software

AirPods firmware updates automatically when connected to an Apple device.
To ensure updates install correctly:

  1. Keep AirPods in the case and connected to power.
  2. Place the case near your iPhone or iPad with an active internet connection.
  3. Wait at least 30 minutes.

You can check the firmware version under Settings > Bluetooth > AirPods (i).

Keeping your iPhone, iPad, or Mac on the latest iOS or macOS version also helps prevent compatibility issues.

Manually Pair to Non-Apple Devices

If pairing with a Windows PC, Android phone, or other Bluetooth device:

  1. Put the AirPods in the charging case.
  2. Open the lid.
  3. Press and hold the setup button until the LED flashes white.
  4. On the device, open Bluetooth settings and select the AirPods from the list.

If the AirPods do not appear, turn Bluetooth off and back on, then retry.

Clean the AirPods and Charging Case

Dirt or debris on the charging contacts can interfere with pairing and charging.

  • Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to clean the earbuds and case.
  • Avoid using liquids or compressed air.
  • Ensure both AirPods are making proper contact inside the case.

Check iCloud Syncing

If you use multiple Apple devices signed in with the same Apple ID:

  • Ensure you are signed in with the same iCloud account on all devices.
  • Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud and confirm the account.
  • Once paired with one device, AirPods should automatically connect to others using the same Apple ID.

Test Each AirPod Separately

If only one AirPod connects or the other won’t pair:

  1. Place both AirPods in the case.
  2. Take out only the working AirPod and test the connection.
  3. Repeat with the other AirPod.
If one fails to connect, that individual unit may need service.

When to Contact Apple Support

If AirPods still cannot pair after these steps:

  • The AirPods might have hardware or battery issues.
  • Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for diagnostics.
  • You can check warranty coverage under checkcoverage.apple.com.
