AirPods Cannot Be Detected

When AirPods cannot be detected by your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or other Bluetooth devices, it usually indicates a connection, firmware, or hardware issue. Fixing this problem requires checking Bluetooth settings, resetting the AirPods, and ensuring proper power and pairing conditions.

Check the AirPods and Charging Case

Before trying advanced solutions, confirm that both the AirPods and the charging case are working correctly.

  • Make sure the AirPods are charged.
  • Keep both AirPods inside the case and close the lid for 30 seconds.
  • Open the lid and check if the status light turns on.
  • If there’s no light, connect the case to a charger for at least 15 minutes.

If the AirPods or the case show no response after charging, the battery may be fully depleted or the case might be faulty.

Verify Bluetooth and Device Settings

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth.
  2. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
  3. Toggle Bluetooth off and back on to refresh the connection.
  4. If the AirPods do not appear, check Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff, and make sure Handoff is enabled.

On Mac

  1. Select the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar or go to System Settings > Bluetooth.
  2. Confirm Bluetooth is turned on.
  3. If the AirPods don’t appear, click “Debug > Reset the Bluetooth module” (available through the Bluetooth menu in older macOS versions).

If Bluetooth isn’t functioning properly, the AirPods won’t be detected by the device.

Reset the AirPods

A full reset clears corrupted pairing data that can prevent detection.

How to Reset AirPods or AirPods Pro

  1. Place both AirPods in the case.
  2. Close the lid for 30 seconds, then open it.
  3. On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the i next to your AirPods, and choose Forget This Device.
  4. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the light flashes amber, then white.
  5. Reconnect the AirPods by opening the lid near your device and following the on-screen instructions.

After resetting, the AirPods should reappear in the Bluetooth list as a new device.

Check for Interference and Range

AirPods may not be detected if there’s wireless interference or if they’re too far from the device.

  • Keep the AirPods within 10 meters (33 feet) of your device.
  • Move away from Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones, and other Bluetooth accessories.
  • Avoid placing the AirPods near metal objects or inside bags during pairing.

Reducing interference ensures the Bluetooth signal is clear and stable.

Update Device Software and AirPods Firmware

Outdated software can prevent AirPods from being recognized properly.

To Update Your Device

  • On iPhone or iPad: Settings > General > Software Update.
  • On Mac: System Settings > General > Software Update.

To Update AirPods Firmware

  1. Place the AirPods in the case.
  2. Connect the case to a charger.
  3. Keep it near a paired iPhone or iPad with an active internet connection.
  4. Wait at least 30 minutes for the update to apply automatically.

Firmware updates often include fixes for connection and detection issues.

Try Pairing With Another Device

Testing with a different device helps identify if the issue lies with the AirPods or the original device.

  1. Put AirPods in pairing mode by pressing and holding the setup button until the LED flashes white.
  2. On another phone, tablet, or computer, open Bluetooth settings and check if the AirPods appear.
  3. If they are detected by another device, the issue is likely software-related on the original device.

If they are not detected by any device, the AirPods may have a hardware fault.

Clean the AirPods and Charging Contacts

Dust and debris can prevent the AirPods from charging or being recognized by the case.

  • Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to clean the AirPods and charging ports.
  • Ensure both AirPods sit correctly inside the case.
  • Do not use liquids, sprays, or compressed air.

If one AirPod isn’t charging, the case might not detect it, which can cause pairing or detection errors.

Check iCloud Syncing for Apple Devices

If you use multiple Apple devices with the same Apple ID:

  • Ensure that all devices are signed in to the same iCloud account.
  • Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud to verify.
  • AirPods should automatically appear under Bluetooth or sound output options on other devices signed in with that Apple ID.

If they don’t, remove the AirPods from one device and re-pair them; iCloud will then update the new connection across devices.

When AirPods Still Cannot Be Detected

If the AirPods do not appear after all troubleshooting steps:

  • The issue may be due to hardware failure in the Bluetooth module or charging case.
  • Try checking the AirPods’ serial number on checkcoverage.apple.com to see if they are still under warranty.
  • Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for inspection or replacement.
