If your HP printer cannot be contacted over the network, it’s usually due to connectivity issues, incorrect configurations, or firewall restrictions. Follow the steps below to identify and fix the problem.
Check Printer Status and Connection
Ensure the Printer is Powered On
- Make sure the printer is turned on and not in sleep or error state.
- Look for any blinking lights or warning messages on the printer screen.
Verify Network Connection
- Confirm the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi or Ethernet network as your computer.
- If using Wi-Fi, check that the wireless icon on the printer is solid (not blinking).
- For wired connections, ensure the Ethernet cable is securely connected and the link light is active.
Restart Devices
Reboot to Refresh Network Communication
- Turn off your printer, router, and computer.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Turn on the router first, then the printer, and finally your computer.
Confirm Printer IP Address
Print a Network Configuration Page
- On the printer, go to Settings > Network Setup > Print Network Configuration.
- Note the IP address listed.
Test Connectivity
- On your computer, open a web browser and enter the printer’s IP address.
- If the printer page doesn’t load, it may not be properly connected.
Reconnect the Printer to the Network
Wireless Setup
- On the printer, go to Settings > Network > Wireless Setup Wizard.
- Select your Wi-Fi network and enter the correct password.
Wired (Ethernet) Setup
- Make sure the cable is firmly plugged in.
- Use a different Ethernet cable or port if needed.
Add Printer Manually Using IP Address
On Windows
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners > Add a printer.
- Select The printer I want isn’t listed > Add a printer using a TCP/IP address.
- Enter the IP address from the configuration page.
On macOS
- Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners > +.
- Click IP and enter the printer’s IP address.
Disable Firewall or Security Software Temporarily
Firewalls May Block Communication
- Temporarily disable any third-party firewall or antivirus.
- Try to connect to the printer again.
- Re-enable security software afterward.
Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers
Use HP’s Latest Software
- Go to HP Support and enter your printer model.
- Download and install the latest drivers or HP Smart app.
Reset Printer Network Settings
Restore Default Settings
- On the printer: Settings > Network Settings > Restore Network Defaults.
- Reconnect to your Wi-Fi or Ethernet network.
Assign a Static IP Address
Stabilize Connection
- In the printer settings: Network > Advanced > IP Settings > Manual.
- Assign an unused IP address within your network’s range.
- Use this IP to add the printer manually.
Use HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows)
Automated Fix Tool
- Download from HP’s official website.
- Open the tool, select your printer, and let it diagnose and fix connectivity issues.
