If your Canon printer cannot find your wireless router (Wi-Fi network) during setup, it’s typically due to network compatibility issues, signal interference, or printer configuration errors. This problem is common in wireless Canon models like PIXMA, MAXIFY, imageCLASS, and SELPHY.
Here’s how to troubleshoot and fix the issue.
1. Check Printer Compatibility and Wi-Fi Mode
Confirm Wi-Fi Capability
- Ensure your printer supports wireless LAN (Wi-Fi).
- Models with a Wi-Fi button or wireless LAN settings in the menu support wireless setup.
Enable Wi-Fi on the Printer
- On the printer, go to:
- Settings > LAN Settings > Wireless LAN Setup
- Or use Easy Wireless Connect, Standard Setup, or WPS (depending on your model)
- Confirm Wireless LAN is enabled.
2. Restart All Devices
- Power off your printer, wireless router, and computer or phone.
- Wait 30 seconds, then turn them back on in this order:
- Router
- Printer
- Computer or mobile device
This helps refresh the connection environment.
3. Use a 2.4 GHz Network (Not 5 GHz)
Most Canon printers only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi – they cannot see or connect to 5 GHz networks.
What to do:
- Make sure your router’s 2.4 GHz band is enabled.
- If you have a dual-band router, separate the SSIDs:
- Rename your networks to something like
HomeWiFi_2GandHomeWiFi_5G
- Rename your networks to something like
- Connect the printer to the 2.4 GHz SSID only
4. Make Sure the Router is Broadcasting the Network
Enable SSID Broadcast
- Log in to your router’s admin panel (usually at
192.168.1.1or192.168.0.1) - Make sure the SSID (network name) is visible/broadcasted
- If the SSID is hidden, you will need to manually enter it on the printer
5. Check Wi-Fi Signal Strength
Place the Printer Closer to the Router
- Keep the printer within 10–15 feet of the router during setup
- Avoid thick walls, metal furniture, or electronic interference (microwaves, cordless phones)
6. Try WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) Method
If your router has a WPS button, this is the easiest method:
How to Use WPS:
- Press the WPS button on your router
- Within 2 minutes, press the Wi-Fi or WPS button on your Canon printer
- The Wi-Fi light will blink and stay solid when connected
Not all routers or printers support WPS. Check your manual for compatibility.
7. Manually Enter SSID and Password
If the printer can’t detect your router but the network is working:
- Go to Wireless LAN Setup > Other Setup > Manual Setup on the printer
- Enter the SSID (network name) exactly as it appears
- Enter the Wi-Fi password (case-sensitive)
- Confirm and attempt connection
8. Reset Printer Network Settings
To start fresh:
- On the printer, go to:
- Settings > Device Settings > Reset Settings > Reset LAN Settings
- Confirm reset
- Reconnect using one of the wireless setup methods
9. Update Printer Firmware (Optional but Recommended)
Outdated firmware can affect connectivity.
- Visit Canon Support
- Enter your printer model
- Download and install the latest firmware update
- Follow instructions for USB or wired update if the printer isn’t online
10. Try Canon PRINT App (Mobile Setup)
- Download the Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY app for iOS or Android
- Open the app and choose Set up a new printer
- Follow on-screen instructions to connect your printer to the router
The app can guide setup more easily than using the printer’s buttons.
11. Check Router Settings (Advanced)
If all else fails:
- Disable MAC address filtering (or add the printer’s MAC address to the allowlist)
- Ensure DHCP is enabled
- Make sure encryption type is WPA2 or WPA3 (older printers may not support WPA3)
- Reduce security settings temporarily during setup (you can re-enable them later)
12. When to Contact Canon Support
Reach out to Canon if:
- Your printer cannot detect any networks at all
- You’ve confirmed your 2.4 GHz network is active and visible
- You’ve tried resets, firmware updates, and mobile setup with no success
- You suspect the Wi-Fi module may be defective
Canon support can provide model-specific help or schedule repair if needed.
