If your AirPods won’t connect even after holding the setup button, it usually means there’s an issue with pairing, firmware, or Bluetooth communication. This guide explains all possible causes and the exact steps you can take to fix the problem and get your AirPods connected again.
Check AirPods Charging Status
Ensure the AirPods and Case Have Power
Your AirPods cannot enter pairing mode if the battery is low or completely drained.
- Place both AirPods in the charging case.
- Connect the case to power using a Lightning cable or MagSafe/USB-C charger.
- Let them charge for at least 15 minutes before trying again.
- When you open the lid near your iPhone, the battery status should appear on-screen.
If no light shows on the case when plugged in, your case might have a charging or hardware issue.
Verify You’re Holding the Setup Button Correctly
The setup button on the back of the case must be held long enough for the AirPods to reset and enter pairing mode.
- Open the case lid with both AirPods inside.
- Hold the setup button on the back for about 15 seconds.
- Wait until the status light flashes amber, then white.
- Release the button only when the white light is flashing – that indicates pairing mode.
If the light never turns white, try cleaning the button area gently or use a different charging cable and port.
Forget AirPods from Bluetooth Settings
If your AirPods were previously paired but now won’t reconnect, old Bluetooth data might be causing a conflict.
- On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the (i) next to your AirPods.
- Choose Forget This Device and confirm.
- Restart your iPhone, then try pairing the AirPods again by holding the setup button until the white light flashes.
Reset Your AirPods Completely
A full reset clears all settings and forces a new connection.
- Place AirPods in the charging case and close the lid for 30 seconds.
- Open the lid.
- Hold the setup button until the light flashes amber, then white.
- On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth, and connect when they appear under Other Devices.
This step fixes most connection failures caused by firmware or pairing data issues.
Clean the AirPods and Charging Case
Dirt or debris on the metal charging contacts can prevent proper resetting or pairing.
- Use a dry, soft brush or microfiber cloth to clean the contacts inside the case.
- Make sure the AirPods sit firmly and make full contact with the charging pins.
- Avoid using liquids or compressed air directly on the case.
Check for iOS and Firmware Updates
Compatibility issues can occur if your iPhone or AirPods are using outdated software.
- Update iPhone: Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available updates.
- Update AirPods Firmware: Keep AirPods in the case, connected to your iPhone, and charging. Firmware updates install automatically within a few hours.
Try Pairing with Another Device
If your AirPods still won’t connect, test them on a different Apple device.
- Try connecting to another iPhone, iPad, or Mac using the same steps.
- If they pair successfully on another device, the issue may be with your iPhone’s Bluetooth or system settings.
Reset Network Settings on iPhone
Sometimes, corrupted Bluetooth or network configurations prevent pairing.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
- After restarting, try reconnecting your AirPods again.
Note: This will remove saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings.
Check for Hardware Problems
If the setup button is unresponsive or the light doesn’t flash, your charging case might have a hardware fault.
- Inspect the button for physical damage or looseness.
- Try connecting the case to power and holding the button again.
- If still unresponsive, contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for service.
Use Find My to Verify Connection Status
If your AirPods appear in the Find My app but won’t connect, they may be stuck in a disconnected state.
- Open Find My > Devices and locate your AirPods.
- If shown as Offline, they need to be within range and powered on to reconnect.
- Once they appear Online, attempt pairing again using the setup button.
