HP Envy Overheating in Sleep Mode – How to Fix it

If your HP Envy laptop overheats while in sleep mode, it usually means the device is not entering proper low-power state or is waking due to background activity. Here’s how to identify the cause and fix it.

Check if the Laptop Is Actually in Sleep Mode

Disable Fast Startup

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended).
  • Save changes and reboot.

Confirm Sleep Behavior

  • Press Win + X > Power Options > Additional power settings.
  • Click Choose what closing the lid does.
  • Ensure Sleep is selected for both Plugged in and Battery states.

Prevent Device Wake Events

Disable Wake Timers

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Edit Plan Settings > Change advanced power settings.
  • Expand Sleep > Allow wake timers and set both options to Disable.

Identify Wake Sources

  • Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  • Run: powercfg -lastwake
  • Also run: powercfg -devicequery wake_armed
  • These commands show which devices are waking your laptop. You can disable their wake ability in Device Manager.

Update BIOS and Drivers

Update BIOS

  • Visit the official HP Support website.
  • Download the latest BIOS update for your HP Envy model and install it carefully.

Update Device Drivers

  • Update chipset, graphics, and Intel Management Engine Interface drivers.
  • Use HP Support Assistant or Device Manager.

Adjust Sleep and Hibernate Settings

Use Hibernate Instead of Sleep

  • Go to Power Options > Change advanced power settings.
  • Set Sleep after to Never.
  • Set Hibernate after to a suitable time like 15 minutes.

Disable Connected Standby (Modern Standby)

Some HP Envy models support Modern Standby, which can cause overheating.
To check and disable (if possible):

  1. Open Command Prompt as admin.
  2. Run: powercfg /a
  3. If S0 Low Power Idle is supported, consider disabling it via registry (only recommended for advanced users).

Clean Vents and Ensure Proper Cooling

  • Make sure air vents are not blocked when the laptop is on soft surfaces.
  • Use a cooling pad if needed.
  • Clean dust from fans using compressed air.

Disable Background Tasks and Apps

  • Go to Task Scheduler and disable unnecessary tasks scheduled during sleep.
  • In Settings > Apps > Startup, disable unneeded apps.

By ensuring the laptop enters proper sleep or hibernation, updating system firmware, and preventing unwanted wake events, you can stop your HP Envy from overheating in sleep mode.
