HP Printer Cannot Connect to Web Services – How to Fix it

If your HP printer cannot connect to Web Services, you may be unable to use features like HP ePrint or scan-to-email. This issue is usually caused by network problems, DNS settings, firmware issues, or service configuration. Follow the steps below to fix it.

Check Internet Connection

Verify Printer Network Status

  • Make sure your printer is connected to a Wi-Fi or Ethernet network with active internet access.
  • Print a Wireless Network Test Report from your printer’s control panel to confirm the connection.

Restart Devices

  • Power cycle your printer, router, and computer or mobile device.
  • Wait at least 30 seconds before powering them back on.

Verify Web Services Availability

Check HP Web Services Server

  • Web Services may be temporarily unavailable.
  • Try accessing HP’s Web Services manually:
Go to Settings > Web Services > Setup on your printer.

Remove and Re-enable Web Services

  • On the printer’s display, go to Settings > Web Services > Remove Web Services.
  • After removal, go back and tap Enable Web Services.

Update Printer Firmware

Use HP Smart App or Printer Control Panel

  • Open the HP Smart app or printer menu and check for firmware updates.
  • Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.

Check Date and Time Settings

Set Correct Date and Time

  • Go to Settings > Preferences > Date and Time on your printer.
  • Set the correct local time and date – Web Services may fail with incorrect time settings.

Adjust DNS Settings

Set Google DNS on Printer

  1. From the printer’s control panel, open Network Settings.
  2. Set Manual IP Address and configure DNS manually:
    • Preferred DNS: 8.8.8.8
    • Alternate DNS: 8.8.4.4
  3. Save and reconnect to the network.

Disable Proxy Settings

Turn Off Proxy on Printer

  • Navigate to Network Settings > Advanced Settings > Proxy Settings.
  • Make sure proxy is set to Off or cleared if filled in.

Ensure Compatible Network Type

Avoid Guest Networks or VPN

  • Make sure the printer is not connected to a guest or isolated network.
  • Web Services require a direct internet connection – VPNs and firewalls may block it.

Check Router Settings

Enable Internet Access for Printer

  • Some routers have parental controls or firewalls that block specific devices.
  • Log into your router and ensure the printer has internet access.

Reset Network Settings

Restore Network Defaults

  • On the printer, go to Settings > Network > Restore Network Settings.
  • Reconnect to Wi-Fi and try enabling Web Services again.

Use Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Enable Services via Printer’s IP Address

  1. Find the printer’s IP address via the control panel.
  2. Enter the IP into a browser to access the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  3. Navigate to the Web Services tab and try enabling from there.

If none of these steps restore Web Services, contact HP Support to check for service outages or deeper configuration issues.
