If you can’t open your AirTag to replace the battery or inspect it, the issue is usually due to grip, debris buildup, or misalignment of the stainless-steel back cover. Opening the AirTag properly requires applying even pressure and twisting it in the right direction.
Understand How the AirTag Opens
An AirTag opens by removing its stainless-steel back cover (the side with the Apple logo).
- Press down firmly on the back cover.
- Twist counterclockwise (to the left) until the cover stops turning.
- Lift it off to access the CR2032 coin cell battery.
If this doesn’t work, it’s likely due to pressure issues, misalignment, or residue preventing the cover from turning.
Apply Proper Grip and Pressure
Because the AirTag is small and smooth, getting a proper grip is essential.
- Hold the white plastic side of the AirTag firmly between your thumb and index finger.
- Use both thumbs to press evenly on the metal cover.
- While pressing down, twist the cover left slowly until you feel it release.
If the surface is slippery, try wrapping the AirTag in a rubber glove, rubber band, or silicone pad to increase friction and make turning easier.
Clean Around the Cover Seam
Dirt or debris around the AirTag’s edge can prevent the back from turning.
- Gently wipe the edges with a dry microfiber cloth.
- If debris is lodged in the seam, use a soft brush or compressed air to clear it.
- Avoid using water, alcohol, or sharp tools to prevent damage.
After cleaning, try twisting the back cover again.
Avoid Excessive Force
The AirTag’s locking mechanism is delicate. Avoid tools or force that could damage it.
- Do not use pliers, screwdrivers, or metal objects to twist the cover.
- If it doesn’t move after firm pressure, stop and reposition your fingers to try again with a more even push.
Check for Misalignment
If the back cover isn’t aligned correctly after previous battery changes, it might be jammed.
- Look for the three small tabs on the cover. They must align with the three slots inside the AirTag.
- When reinstalling, line up the tabs, press down, and twist clockwise until it locks.
Temperature Considerations
If your AirTag has been exposed to extreme cold or heat, the metal cover may have contracted or expanded slightly.
- Bring it to room temperature for about 10–15 minutes before attempting to open it again.
- Avoid heating or freezing the device directly.
Try a Non-Slip Surface Technique
Place the AirTag face down on a rubber mat, mouse pad, or silicone phone case.
- Press down on the AirTag with your palm.
- Rotate your hand slightly counterclockwise while maintaining firm, even pressure.
This technique can help if finger grip alone isn’t enough.
Contact Apple Support
