Canon Printer Cannot Print Red Color

If your Canon printer is not printing red, it typically means that one or more color inks (usually magenta or yellow) are clogged, empty, or not functioning properly. Since red is produced by combining magenta and yellow inks, any issue with those components can result in red not printing accurately or at all.

This issue affects Canon PIXMA, MAXIFY, imageCLASS, and other color-capable printers.

1. Confirm Color Ink Levels

Inkjet Printers:

  • Use the printer’s screen or the Canon IJ Printer Assistant Tool to check ink levels.
  • If magenta or yellow is low or empty, replace the cartridge(s).

Laser Printers:

  • Navigate to Menu > Status Monitor > Supplies Info.
  • Replace any depleted toner, especially magenta or yellow.

Red won’t print correctly if either magenta or yellow is missing or malfunctioning.

2. Run a Nozzle Check (Inkjet Models)

This will show which colors are printing correctly.

How to Run:

  1. Go to Maintenance > Nozzle Check from the printer or Canon utility software.
  2. Print the test pattern.
  3. Look at the magenta and yellow test bars:
    • If either is missing or streaked, red will not print correctly.

3. Clean the Printhead

Clogged nozzles are the most common reason for missing colors.

Automatic Cleaning:

  1. Go to Maintenance > Cleaning on the printer screen or Canon software.
  2. Select Color Cleaning or clean all colors.
  3. Print another Nozzle Check.

Deep Cleaning (if necessary):

  • If normal cleaning doesn’t help, run Deep Cleaning.
  • Wait several minutes after completion before testing again.
  • Avoid more than 2–3 deep cleanings in a row, as it uses a lot of ink.

4. Reseat or Replace Ink Cartridges

  1. Open the printer’s cartridge compartment.
  2. Remove the magenta and yellow cartridges.
  3. Check for:
    • Clogged or dry nozzles
    • Residue or dried ink on contacts
  4. Reseat the cartridges firmly, or replace them if they are old or refilled.

Always use genuine Canon cartridges for best results and full compatibility.

5. Check Printer Settings

Sometimes, color settings can override normal output.

On Windows:

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Right-click your printer > Printing Preferences.
  • Under the Main or Color tab:
    • Make sure “Grayscale” or “Black & White” is not selected.
    • Ensure Color Mode is set to Color.

On macOS:

  • In the Print dialog, click “Show Details”.
  • Go to Color Options or Quality & Media.
  • Make sure Grayscale is disabled.

6. Update or Reinstall Printer Driver

Corrupted drivers can sometimes affect color rendering.

Steps:

  1. Go to Canon Support.
  2. Search for your printer model.
  3. Download the latest driver and firmware, if available.
  4. Uninstall the current driver and install the updated version.

7. Try a Different File or Program

  • Print a test image from a different source (e.g., another app, photo viewer, or browser).
  • Try printing a pure red image from Microsoft Paint, Preview, or Photos.
  • If red prints correctly in one app but not others, the issue may be software-related, not hardware.

8. Print From Another Device

  • Try printing the same red document from another computer or mobile device.
  • If red prints correctly, the issue may be with the original device’s settings or driver.

9. Reset Printer Settings

Resetting the printer can resolve misconfigured settings.

  1. Go to Settings > Device Settings > Reset Settings.
  2. Choose Reset All Settings.
  3. Reconnect and reconfigure the printer, then test color printing.

10. When to Contact Canon Support

Contact Canon support if:

  • Red still doesn’t print after replacing cartridges and cleaning the printhead.
  • The nozzle check consistently shows no magenta or yellow output.
  • The printhead may be permanently clogged or defective.
  • The issue persists with genuine Canon ink and updated firmware.

Canon may recommend printhead replacement, advanced diagnostics, or servicing depending on the printer model and warranty status.
