If you forgot your iPhone passcode or your device is locked due to too many failed attempts, there are several ways to remove the screen lock. This guide covers different methods to unlock your iPhone and regain access.
Use Face ID or Touch ID
If your iPhone supports Face ID or Touch ID, try unlocking it using biometric authentication:
- Face ID: Hold the phone in front of your face and swipe up
- Touch ID: Place your registered finger on the home button
If these methods do not work, proceed with the solutions below.
Unlock iPhone Using Apple ID (For Forgotten Passcodes)
Use Find My iPhone to Erase the Device
If Find My iPhone is enabled, you can erase the device and remove the screen lock remotely:
- Go to iCloud.com on a computer or another device
- Sign in with your Apple ID and password
- Click Find iPhone and select your locked iPhone
- Choose Erase iPhone to reset the device
- Set up the iPhone again and restore from backup if available
Remove Screen Lock Using iTunes or Finder
If you have previously synced your iPhone with iTunes (Windows) or Finder (Mac), you can reset it without a passcode.
Restore iPhone Using iTunes/Finder
- Connect your iPhone to a trusted computer using a USB cable
- Open iTunes (Windows) or Finder (Mac)
- Select your iPhone from the sidebar
- Click Restore iPhone and follow the on-screen instructions
This will erase all data, including the screen lock. If you have a backup, you can restore it after resetting.
Use Recovery Mode If iTunes/Finder Doesn’t Recognize iPhone
If iTunes or Finder does not detect your iPhone, use Recovery Mode to remove the screen lock.
Put iPhone in Recovery Mode
- Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes (Windows) or Finder (Mac)
- Force restart the iPhone based on your model:
- iPhone 8 or later: Press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, then hold Side button until you see the recovery mode screen
- iPhone 7/7 Plus: Hold Volume Down + Power button until recovery mode appears
- iPhone 6s or earlier: Hold Home + Power button until recovery mode appears
- Choose Restore when prompted in iTunes or Finder
- Wait for the process to complete, then set up the iPhone again
Use DFU Mode for a Full Reset
If Recovery Mode does not work, DFU (Device Firmware Update) Mode can remove the screen lock.
Steps to Enter DFU Mode
- Connect iPhone to a computer and open iTunes (Windows) or Finder (Mac)
- Put the iPhone into DFU mode:
- iPhone 8 or later: Press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the screen goes black. Then, hold Volume Down + Side button for 5 seconds, release the Side button, and continue holding Volume Down until iTunes/Finder detects the device in DFU mode
- iPhone 7/7 Plus: Hold Volume Down + Power button for 10 seconds, then release Power but keep holding Volume Down
- iPhone 6s or earlier: Hold Home + Power button for 10 seconds, then release Power but keep holding Home
- Click Restore iPhone in iTunes/Finder
- Wait for the process to finish and set up the device as new
Use Third-Party Unlock Tools
Several third-party tools claim to unlock iPhones by removing the screen lock. Some of the most commonly used tools include:
- Tenorshare 4uKey
- iMyFone LockWiper
- Dr.Fone – Screen Unlock
These tools may work for forgotten passcodes but should be used with caution. Always check compatibility with your iOS version before proceeding.
Prevent Future Lockouts
To avoid getting locked out of your iPhone in the future:
- Enable Face ID/Touch ID for easier unlocking
- Set up Find My iPhone for remote unlocking options
- Regularly back up your data to iCloud or iTunes
- Use a passcode you can remember or store it securely
