If your AirPods are not connecting to play a sound in the Find My app, it means there’s a connection or configuration issue preventing communication between your AirPods and Apple’s location network. The following steps explain how to fix this problem and ensure your AirPods can be located and play sound properly.
Check Bluetooth and Network Connection
Ensure Bluetooth Is Enabled
Your AirPods rely on Bluetooth to connect with your iPhone or other Apple device.
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth and confirm it’s turned on.
- If your AirPods are listed but not connected, tap their name to reconnect.
- Try toggling Bluetooth off and on again to reset the connection.
Confirm Internet Connection
The Find My app needs an internet connection to send a play sound command.
- Make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Test by opening a web page or sending a message to confirm connectivity.
Verify AirPods Are Linked to Your Apple ID
For Find My to function, your AirPods must be associated with your Apple ID.
- Open Find My > Devices or Find My > Items on your iPhone.
- Check that your AirPods appear in the list.
- If they don’t appear, they may not be paired with your Apple ID-reset them and pair again.
Check AirPods Battery and Case
Find My cannot connect to AirPods that are powered off or have a dead battery.
- Place both AirPods in the charging case.
- Connect the case to power for at least 15 minutes.
- Then try using Find My > Play Sound again.
If the AirPods were offline due to a low battery, they should reconnect once charged.
Update Firmware and iOS
Outdated firmware or iOS versions can cause Find My connection issues.
- Update iOS: Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Update AirPods Firmware: Keep your AirPods connected to your iPhone and charging. Updates install automatically when conditions are met.
Keeping software current ensures compatibility with Apple’s Find My network.
Check AirPods Location Mode in Find My
If the AirPods are offline, the Play Sound feature won’t work until they reconnect.
- In Find My, check if the AirPods show “Offline” or “Last Seen”.
- If they’re offline, you can only see their last known location.
- Once they’re near your Apple device or connected to the network again, you’ll be able to play sound.
Reset and Reconnect AirPods
If the issue persists, resetting your AirPods can often fix Find My and connectivity problems.
- Forget the AirPods on your iPhone: Settings > Bluetooth > (i) next to your AirPods > Forget This Device.
- Hold the setup button on the back of the charging case for about 15 seconds until the light flashes amber, then white.
- Reconnect them by opening the case near your iPhone and following the pairing instructions.
- Reopen the Find My app and test Play Sound again.
Enable Find My Network and Location Services
Turn On Find My Network
Find My Network allows Apple devices to locate your AirPods even when they’re offline.
- Go to Settings > Your Name > Find My > Find My iPhone.
- Enable Find My iPhone, Find My Network, and Send Last Location.
Enable Location Services
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Make sure it’s turned on.
This ensures accurate AirPods tracking and communication with Apple’s network.
Additional Tips
- Use another Apple device (like an iPad or Mac) signed in with the same Apple ID to test if the AirPods can be located there.
- If the AirPods are stolen or permanently disconnected, the Play Sound feature will not work unless they reconnect to the Find My network.
- For AirPods Pro (2nd generation), precision finding in the Find My app can guide you directly to them when nearby.
