Canon Printer Cannot Install Driver

If your Canon printer cannot install its driver, it’s typically caused by issues such as:

  • Incompatible or outdated driver version
  • Operating system conflicts
  • Incomplete driver files
  • USB or network detection failure
  • Antivirus or firewall interference

This guide will walk you through how to fix Canon driver installation problems on Windows and macOS.

1. Confirm System Compatibility

Check Your Operating System

  • Go to Canon Support
  • Enter your printer model
  • Select your exact operating system version (e.g., Windows 11 64-bit, macOS 13 Ventura)

Do not download drivers intended for another OS version.

2. Disconnect the Printer First

Before installing the driver:

  • Unplug the USB cable (if using USB)
  • Do not turn on or connect the printer to Wi-Fi until the installer prompts you
  • Only connect the printer when asked

3. Run the Installer as Administrator (Windows)

  1. Right-click the downloaded .exe installer
  2. Select “Run as administrator”
  3. Proceed with installation as directed

This avoids permission errors that block driver setup.

4. Disable Antivirus/Firewall Temporarily

Some security software may:

  • Block Canon’s installer from running
  • Prevent the driver from registering correctly

What to do:

  • Temporarily disable antivirus or firewall during installation
  • Re-enable after successful driver install
  • Add Canon installer or driver folder to your allowlist

5. Fully Remove Previous or Failed Canon Drivers

If installation fails repeatedly, a partial driver may be blocking the new install.

On Windows:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features
  2. Uninstall any software that says Canon, UFR II, MF driver, or ScanGear
  3. Restart your PC
  4. Re-run the driver installer

On macOS:

  1. Open Finder > Applications
  2. Delete any Canon folders (e.g., Canon Utilities, Canon MF Printer)
  3. Go to Printers & Scanners, remove the Canon printer
  4. Restart your Mac
  5. Reinstall the driver

6. Install Canon Driver Manually (Windows)

If auto-installation fails, try a manual install.

Steps:

  1. Go to Devices and Printers
  2. Click Add a printer > The printer I want isn’t listed
  3. Select Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings
  4. Choose the correct port (USB or IP address)
  5. Click Have Disk, browse to the Canon driver folder you downloaded
  6. Select the appropriate .inf file and continue the install

7. Use Canon’s Setup Software

Many Canon models come with setup utilities like:

  • Canon IJ Setup (for PIXMA/MAXIFY)
  • Canon MF/LBP Setup Tool (for imageCLASS)
  • Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY (for mobile setup)

Download the correct utility for your model from the Canon website and let it handle the driver install and connection automatically.

8. Use Apple AirPrint (macOS only, as workaround)

If Canon’s macOS driver won’t install:

  1. Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners
  2. Click + to add your Canon printer
  3. If it appears as AirPrint, you can still print basic jobs
  4. Use this until Canon’s full driver can be installed

Note: AirPrint does not support all features (like duplex scanning or advanced options).

9. Try a Different USB Port or Cable (for USB Printers)

  • Use a new or known-good USB cable
  • Plug directly into the computer (no USB hubs)
  • Switch between USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports if available

If the printer isn’t detected, the driver won’t install properly.

10. Extract the Driver Installer (Advanced)

If the driver fails to install from a self-extracting file:

  1. Use a tool like 7-Zip (Windows) to extract the .exe file
  2. Navigate to the extracted folder
  3. Locate the .inf driver file and install it manually via Device Manager

11. Check for Windows Update Conflicts

Occasionally, Windows blocks unsigned or outdated drivers.

Fix:

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates
  • Install all pending updates
  • Reboot and try installing the Canon driver again

12. When to Contact Canon Support

Reach out to Canon support if:

  • The installer fails repeatedly with errors like:
    • “Cannot detect printer”
    • “Driver installation failed”
    • “Printer driver not installed”
  • The printer is not detected by USB or network, even after using Canon tools
  • You’re on a new OS version and no drivers are available yet

Canon may offer updated drivers, firmware patches, or direct installation help.
