Can an AirTag Tracking Be Shared?

AirTag tracking can be shared in limited ways, but not in the same way you might share location data from an iPhone or Apple Watch. Each AirTag is designed to be linked to a single Apple ID, meaning only the owner of that account can manage and control the AirTag. However, there are a few workarounds that allow others to view or access its location under specific conditions.

How AirTag Ownership Works

When an AirTag is first set up, it becomes permanently associated with the Apple ID that paired it.
That Apple ID controls all of its features, including:

  • Location tracking in the Find My app.
  • Sound alerts.
  • Lost Mode activation and recovery messages.

Because of privacy and security design, AirTags cannot be paired with multiple Apple IDs or shared directly between users.

Ways to Share AirTag Location

Although full control cannot be shared, you can still allow others to see the AirTag’s location using Apple’s built-in features.

1. Using Family Sharing

If you have Family Sharing set up with your family group, you can share the AirTag’s location through the Find My network.

Steps:

  1. Go to Settings → [Your Name] → Family Sharing → Location Sharing.
  2. Enable Share My Location.
  3. Family members can then open the Find My app on their own devices and view your shared location – including the items linked to your Apple ID, such as AirTags.

Limitations:

  • Family members can view the AirTag’s location but cannot rename it, make it play a sound, or enable Lost Mode.
  • Only the owner (primary Apple ID) has full control.

2. Using the Same Apple ID on Multiple Devices

If two or more people sign in using the same Apple ID on their iPhones or iPads, each device will have access to the AirTag’s location in the Find My → Items tab.

Benefits:

  • All devices can view the AirTag’s real-time location.
  • Anyone signed in can make it play a sound or mark it as lost.

Downsides:

  • Sharing the same Apple ID also shares photos, contacts, messages, and other personal data – not ideal for privacy.
  • This method is practical only for couples or shared family devices, not general sharing.

3. Sharing Location Information Manually

If you want to share the AirTag’s location without giving access to your Apple ID:

  • Take a screenshot of the Find My map showing the AirTag’s position.
  • Send it via Messages or another app.

This provides one-time location sharing but doesn’t allow the other person to track or interact with the AirTag.

Why Apple Limits AirTag Sharing

Apple’s restrictions are intentional and based on privacy and safety protections.
Allowing multiple users to access or control one AirTag could:

  • Create security risks (for example, unauthorized tracking).
  • Bypass anti-stalking alerts.
  • Expose personal Apple ID data.

These safeguards ensure AirTags can’t be used for unwanted or secret tracking of people.

Can Multiple People Track the Same Item?

If you want multiple people to track a shared item (like a car, luggage, or bike), there are two main options:

  1. Use a Shared Apple ID for That Item
    • Set up the AirTag under a shared Apple ID used only for that purpose.
    • Each person can sign into that account on their device to view the AirTag.
  2. Use Multiple AirTags
    • Attach separate AirTags to the same item.
    • Each AirTag can be linked to a different Apple ID so multiple people can track it independently.

What You Cannot Do

  • You cannot add collaborators or secondary users to an AirTag.
  • You cannot share AirTag access through AirDrop, Messages, or Find My Contacts.
  • You cannot temporarily transfer control – the AirTag must be removed from the original Apple ID first.

Summary

  • AirTags are tied to one Apple ID and cannot be shared directly between multiple users.
  • You can share tracking indirectly through Family Sharing, the same Apple ID, or manual updates.
  • Apple restricts multi-user access for privacy and anti-stalking reasons.
  • For shared tracking (vehicles, equipment, luggage), use separate AirTags or a shared Apple ID dedicated to that item.
