An AirTag can only be connected to one Apple ID at a time, meaning it cannot be directly shared or linked with multiple devices under different accounts. However, there are specific ways to allow more than one person-or multiple devices-to interact with or locate an AirTag indirectly.
AirTags Are Linked to One Apple ID
When you set up an AirTag, it becomes locked to your Apple ID through the Find My app.
This connection ensures that:
- Only you can view its location.
- Others can’t track or pair it without your permission.
- The AirTag cannot be added to another Apple ID unless it’s removed from yours first.
So, if you try to connect an already-paired AirTag to another iPhone or iPad with a different Apple ID, you’ll get a message saying it’s “linked to another Apple ID.”
How Multiple Devices Can Still Access the Same AirTag
Even though only one Apple ID can own an AirTag, there are workarounds to make it visible or useful across multiple devices.
1. Use Devices Signed In to the Same Apple ID
Any iPhone, iPad, or Mac logged in to the same Apple ID can access the AirTag.
For example:
- If you own both an iPhone and an iPad, and both are signed in with your Apple ID, you’ll see your AirTag’s location on both devices.
- This works seamlessly across all Apple devices connected to your iCloud account.
Best for: Users who want to track the same AirTag from personal devices.
2. Use Family Sharing for General Location
While AirTags can’t be shared directly via Family Sharing, family members can still see your device’s location (not the AirTag itself).
This helps others know your general area if you’re carrying an item with the AirTag attached.
To turn this on:
- Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Family Sharing > Location Sharing.
- Enable Share My Location.
Note: Family members won’t see the AirTag’s location in their Find My > Items tab-only your device’s.
3. Transfer Ownership Between Users
If someone else needs full control of the AirTag, you can remove it from your account so they can set it up under theirs.
Steps to transfer:
- Open Find My > Items → select the AirTag.
- Scroll down and tap Remove Item.
- Confirm the removal.
- Reset the AirTag by removing and reinserting the battery five times until you hear a fifth tone.
- The new user can then pair it by holding it near their iPhone.
This process completely unlinks it from your Apple ID and assigns it to theirs.
Why Apple Limits AirTag Sharing
Apple designed AirTags with strong privacy protections to prevent misuse, such as unauthorized tracking.
Allowing multiple users or Apple IDs to access one AirTag could expose sensitive location data.
That’s why:
- Each AirTag can only belong to one person at a time.
- It uses end-to-end encryption so only the owner can view its location.
- Apple sends anti-stalking alerts if an unknown AirTag is detected traveling with someone.
Alternative Options That Support Multiple Users
If you need a tracker that multiple people can access or manage, consider these alternatives:
- Tile Trackers – Allow shared access with other users through the Tile app.
- Chipolo ONE Spot – Works with Apple’s Find My network but still single-user; however, Chipolo’s own app supports sharing.
- GPS Trackers (e.g., Tracki, Jiobit) – Designed for live tracking with multi-user access and detailed history.
These are better suited for families, teams, or businesses that need shared tracking features.
Summary
| Feature | AirTag | Tile | GPS Trackers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Connect to multiple Apple IDs | ❌ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Use across personal devices (same Apple ID) | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Share live location with others | ❌ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Privacy protection (anti-stalking) | ✅ | ⚠️ | ⚠️ |
While an AirTag cannot be connected to two Apple IDs or users, it can be tracked across multiple devices signed in with the same Apple ID. For shared or group tracking, other Bluetooth or GPS-based trackers offer better flexibility.
