AirTags are designed to work with a single Apple ID at a time, which means they cannot be directly connected to multiple phones. However, there are ways to allow limited sharing of location information with other people using Apple’s Family Sharing and Find My features.
AirTag Ownership and Apple ID
Each AirTag is permanently linked to the Apple ID used during setup.
When an AirTag is paired for the first time, it becomes registered to that account, and only that person can view or manage it in the Find My app.
What This Means
- Only one iPhone (the owner’s) can manage the AirTag.
- You cannot add the same AirTag to another iPhone or iPad with a different Apple ID.
- If you try to pair it on another phone, you’ll see a message saying the AirTag is “connected to another Apple ID.”
To use it with another account, the original owner must remove it from their Apple ID first.
How to Remove an AirTag From an Apple ID
- Open the Find My app on the owner’s iPhone.
- Tap the Items tab.
- Select the AirTag you want to unpair.
- Scroll down and tap Remove Item.
- Confirm removal.
Once removed, the AirTag is no longer linked to that Apple ID and can be paired with a new iPhone.
Sharing AirTag Location With Multiple Phones
Although multiple phones cannot control or pair with one AirTag, you can still share its location with others through Apple’s Family Sharing feature.
Using Family Sharing
If you have Family Sharing enabled:
- Go to Settings → [Your Name] → Family Sharing → Location Sharing.
- Make sure Share My Location is turned on.
- Family members can open the Find My app on their devices and view the AirTag’s location under Items Shared With You (if the AirTag is associated with your shared Apple ID).
Note: Family Sharing allows members to see the AirTag’s location, but not to rename it, enable Lost Mode, or change settings – only the owner can do that.
Can a Single AirTag Work With Two iPhones on the Same Apple ID?
Yes.
If both phones use the same Apple ID, the AirTag’s location will appear in the Find My app on both devices.
This can be helpful when:
- You use both an iPhone and an iPad.
- A couple shares one Apple ID for convenience.
All devices signed in with that Apple ID can see the AirTag’s real-time location and manage settings.
Limitations of Sharing AirTag Access
Even with Family Sharing or the same Apple ID, AirTag access is limited:
- Only one Apple ID can own and manage the AirTag.
- Shared users cannot make the AirTag play a sound, rename it, or enable Lost Mode.
- If the AirTag moves with another person who has a different Apple ID, they may receive a tracking alert, as Apple’s anti-stalking system assumes the AirTag might be unwanted.
1. Use the Same Apple ID on Multiple Devices
If you and your partner or family share an Apple ID, all devices can access the AirTag’s location.
However, this also means all devices share messages, contacts, and other synced data, which may not be ideal for privacy.
2. Use Separate AirTags for Each User
If multiple people need to track different items (keys, bags, etc.), it’s better to assign each person their own AirTag. Each user can then manage their device independently under their Apple ID.
If the goal is to track a shared object like family luggage or car keys, one person can register the AirTag and share its location through Family Sharing so everyone can see where it is.
Summary
- An AirTag can only be linked to one Apple ID at a time.
- You cannot pair a single AirTag with multiple iPhones under different Apple IDs.
- Multiple devices using the same Apple ID can view and manage the AirTag.
- Family Sharing allows others to see the AirTag’s location, but not control it.
- For multi-user tracking, each person should have their own AirTag registered to their Apple ID.
