AirTag Cannot Detect

When your AirTag cannot detect or locate an item, it usually means there’s a connection, setup, or software problem. Understanding the possible causes and applying the right fixes can help restore its functionality quickly.

Check Bluetooth and Location Settings

Enable Bluetooth

AirTags communicate via Bluetooth. If Bluetooth is turned off, your iPhone or iPad will not be able to detect the AirTag.

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth and ensure it is turned on.
  • If it’s already enabled, toggle it off and back on to refresh the connection.

Verify Location Services

For accurate detection, Location Services must be active.

  • Navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and confirm it’s on.
  • Scroll down and check that the Find My app has permission to use your location.

Check the AirTag’s Battery

A weak or dead AirTag battery can prevent detection.

  • Gently press and twist the back cover of the AirTag counterclockwise to open it.
  • Remove the battery and reinsert it, ensuring it clicks in place.
  • If there’s no sound or response, replace it with a CR2032 coin cell battery.

Ensure the AirTag Is in Range

AirTags rely on proximity to an iPhone or another device in the Find My network.

  • Move closer to the AirTag’s last known location.
  • Keep the AirTag within 10–15 meters of your iPhone for initial detection.
  • Avoid metal surfaces or thick walls that may block the Bluetooth signal.

Reset and Reconnect the AirTag

If your AirTag still cannot be detected, a reset can help.

  1. Remove the AirTag from your Apple ID:
    • Open the Find My app → Items tab → select the AirTag → tap Remove Item.
  2. Reset the AirTag manually:
    • Remove the battery.
    • Reinsert it and press until you hear a sound.
    • Repeat this five times until you hear a fifth tone.
  3. Reconnect by bringing the AirTag near your iPhone and following the on-screen setup.

Update iOS and the Find My App

Outdated software may cause connectivity issues.

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest version of iOS.
  • Ensure the Find My app is updated through the App Store.
Updating both can fix bugs that prevent AirTags from being detected correctly.

Check for Interference and Device Conflicts

Wireless interference from other devices can affect Bluetooth communication.

  • Turn off nearby Bluetooth accessories temporarily.
  • Avoid using AirTags in areas with heavy Wi-Fi or microwave interference.
  • Restart your iPhone after disconnecting unused devices.

Test with Another Device

To rule out an issue with your phone, try detecting the AirTag with another iPhone or iPad linked to your Apple ID.
If it works with the other device, the problem lies with your primary device’s Bluetooth or network settings.

Contact Apple Support

If none of the steps resolve the issue, the AirTag may have a hardware defect.

  • Visit an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider for diagnostic testing.
  • If the AirTag is under warranty, Apple can replace it free of charge.
