Can AirTag Be Used With Android?

Apple AirTags are designed primarily for the Apple ecosystem, but Android users can still interact with them in limited ways. Understanding what works – and what doesn’t – helps you know whether an AirTag suits your needs.

AirTag Compatibility With Android Devices

Pairing and Tracking

AirTags cannot be paired or tracked using an Android phone.
They require an iPhone or iPad running iOS 14.5 or later to set up through the Find My app.
Android devices do not have access to the Find My network, meaning you cannot use them to locate or manage AirTags.

Basic NFC Functionality

While Android users cannot pair or track AirTags, they can read AirTag information using NFC (Near Field Communication).
If an Android device detects a lost AirTag, the user can:

  1. Tap the AirTag with the back of the phone.
  2. The phone opens a webpage displaying the owner’s contact information, if the AirTag is in Lost Mode.

This allows Android users to help return lost items to their owners.

Using AirTags to Track Items With Android (Indirect Options)

Option 1: Borrow or Share an iPhone for Setup

You can set up the AirTag with an iPhone, link it to an Apple ID, and then use that same iPhone (or an iPad or Mac) to track it later.
However, without ongoing access to an Apple device, you won’t be able to view its live location or receive notifications.

Option 2: Family Member Tracking

If someone in your household uses an iPhone, they can manage the AirTag for you under their Apple ID.
You can then rely on them to check or share its location updates when needed.

Android Alternatives to AirTag

If you use Android and want full functionality similar to AirTags, consider alternatives that integrate directly with Android’s tracking systems.

Samsung Galaxy SmartTag and SmartTag2

These work with the SmartThings Find network and are compatible with Samsung Galaxy phones.
They offer similar features such as:

  • Bluetooth and UWB tracking
  • Lost item notifications
  • Ringing the tag from your phone

Tile Trackers

Tile Mate, Tile Pro, and Tile Slim are compatible with both Android and iOS.
They use the Tile app and a crowdsourced location network to find lost items, similar to Apple’s Find My system.

Chipolo Trackers

Chipolo ONE and Chipolo CARD are Bluetooth trackers that also work with Android devices.
They integrate with the Chipolo app, offering out-of-range alerts and community-based item finding.

Detecting Unknown AirTags With Android

To protect privacy, Google and Apple collaborated to make unknown AirTag detection available on Android.

Use “Tracker Detect” App

Download Apple’s Tracker Detect app from Google Play. It scans for nearby AirTags that are not registered to your Apple ID.
If an AirTag is moving with you, the app will alert you and allow you to make the AirTag play a sound to locate it.

Google’s Built-In Tracking Protection

Starting with Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) and later, Google has integrated unknown tracker alerts directly into the system.
Android phones can now automatically detect and warn users if an AirTag or similar Bluetooth tracker is following them.

Summary of Android Use Cases

  • Android users cannot pair, locate, or manage AirTags.
  • They can scan AirTags with NFC to view owner details.
  • They can detect nearby unknown AirTags using the Tracker Detect app or Android’s built-in feature.
  • For full functionality, use Galaxy SmartTag, Tile, or Chipolo, which are built for Android tracking systems.
