If your JBL speaker has been exposed to water beyond its rated protection (e.g. submerged too deep, exposed too long, or not sealed properly), it may stop working or behave abnormally. Quick action can sometimes save the speaker or prevent further damage.
Step 1: Power Off Immediately
- Turn off the speaker right away if it’s still on.
- Do not try to power it back on – this could short out internal circuits.
- If the speaker won’t turn off, let the battery drain completely.
Step 2: Remove Excess Water
- Shake the speaker gently to remove any water trapped inside.
- Pat dry with a clean, absorbent towel.
- Pay extra attention to ports, seams, and grills.
Step 3: Let It Air Dry
- Place the speaker in a dry, warm, well-ventilated room.
- Set it on a towel or soft surface with any ports facing down.
- Leave it for at least 24–48 hours.
Optional: Use Silica Gel or Rice
- Place the speaker in a sealed container with silica gel packets or uncooked rice.
- These materials help absorb internal moisture.
- Leave it sealed for 1–2 days.
Step 4: Inspect for Visible Damage
- Look inside the charging port and buttons for signs of corrosion or residue.
- If the speaker was exposed to saltwater, rinse the exterior with fresh water while the speaker is off, then dry again. Salt can corrode the internal components more aggressively.
Step 5: Try to Power It On
- After drying completely, attempt to turn the speaker back on.
- If it turns on normally, test Bluetooth and audio playback.
- If it behaves oddly (no sound, won’t pair, low volume), further repair may be needed.
Step 6: Check for Residual Issues
Symptoms After Water Damage
- Buttons not working
- Distorted or muffled sound
- Charging port not responding
- Speaker powers on but won’t connect or play audio
These may indicate internal corrosion, driver damage, or power circuit issues.
Step 7: Open the Speaker (Advanced)
If the speaker still doesn’t work after drying and you’re comfortable with repairs:
- Use plastic prying tools and screwdrivers to carefully open the speaker.
- Look for:
- Corrosion on the circuit board
- Loose or rusted connections
- Water trapped near the battery or drivers
- Clean affected areas with 99% isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush.
- Let all parts dry completely before reassembling.
Note: Opening the speaker may void the warranty.
Step 8: Consider Replacement Parts
If a specific component is damaged:
- Drivers can be replaced if sound is distorted or absent.
- Battery can be replaced if the speaker won’t charge or turn on.
- Charging port can be replaced if water has shorted it out.
Replacement parts for common models like Flip, Charge, and Xtreme are often available online.
Step 9: Contact JBL Support
If your speaker is still under warranty and water damage occurred within IP-rated limits:
- JBL may replace or repair the speaker depending on inspection.
- You will need proof of purchase and may be asked to ship the speaker.
If water damage is beyond warranty or outside rated protection, a paid repair or replacement may be your best option.
