Iphone Camera Not Working? 10 Ways to Fix it!

The iPhone Camera app should be one of the most frequently used apps by iPhone users. We often take selfies or shoot slow-motion videos with our iPhones. There’s nothing more frustrating than the iPhone camera not working when we want to capture the perfect moment. iPhone camera not working or encountering a black screen is the most common issue reported in the Apple community. In this article, we will discuss how to address the most common iPhone camera problems: black screens, flipped images, blurry pictures, and more.

1. Remove iPhone Case

This technique is especially useful if the iPhone’s rear camera is malfunctioning. Simply take off the case and check if the camera functions properly again.

2. Restart Your iPhone

If your iPhone’s front or rear camera is not working, simply restart the device.

For iPhone X or later models:

  1. Press and hold the Side button along with any of the volume buttons.
  2. Keep holding the buttons until the power off slider appears.
  3. Drag the slider to turn off the device.
  4. Press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.

For iPhone 8 or older models:

  1. Press and hold the top button until the power off slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider to turn off the device.
  3. Once it’s powered off, press and hold the top button again until the Apple logo appears.

3. Clean Camera Lens/Obstruction of Camera Lens

At times, your iPhone X camera might fail to function due to dirt obstruction. Therefore, employing a polishing cloth to cleanse it is advisable.

The absence of an image on your camera could be attributed to obstruction. Verify that there are no obstructions on your camera lens, such as fingers or a phone case. While most phone cases are tailored with cutouts for the iPhone 12’s camera placements, there’s a chance that the case orientation is incorrect or some part of it is hindering the camera’s perspective.

4. Close Camera App

Closing the camera app is another method to tackle this issue.

For iPhone X or later models (including iPhone 15):

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen, then pause somewhere around the middle.

For iPhone 8 or earlier models:

  • Double-tap the Home Button to view recently used apps.
  • Swipe horizontally to locate the camera app, then swipe up on the app to close it.

5. Test with FaceTime

Utilizing the FaceTime app could be the fastest method to examine both front and back cameras. Open the app with a friend and switch between the front and back cameras. It is the optimal app for assessing whether the issue arises with one or both cameras.

6. Update iOS Version

If the iPhone’s front or back camera is not working, it could be due to an outdated iOS version. You can easily resolve this by updating it.

  1. Open the Settings app and select General.
  2. Choose Software Update.
  3. If a newer iOS version is available, you’ll see it listed. Simply tap on the “Download and Install” option.

Resetting all settings will result in the removal of WiFi passwords and the reset of all connections.

  1. Navigate to Settings and choose General.
  2. Tap on Reset.
  3. Select Reset All Settings. This action will restore your device to its default settings. Look into whether the camera is now functioning properly.
